Diabetic amputee needs help

Scott Christeson has had a long tough battle with type 1 diabetes for 30 years. About 2 years ago he developed an ulcer on his right heel that was quite wide and deep. Scott's health over those two years declined with inflammation in every joint; infections causing him to be on oral and IV antibiotics constantly. During the course of Scott's many hospital visits, the doctors found him to be septic and in kidney failure. Not only was he diagnosed with autonomic disorder (delayed signals from the brain to his heart) and hemolytic anemia (body destroying red blood cells), a bone scan showed he had developed osteomyelitis in his left heel bone. Scott was lucky if he had two good hours in the day to complete daily tasks and accept the nurse's visits or get to the doctors office or hospital appointments; most of the time was spent in pain and in his bed.

On August 5, 2017 due to the osteomyelitis and a newly formed ulcer on the left heel, Scott had a below knee amputation. He has been in the hospital since June 29th and is now spending time in rehab trying to learn to walk again with a prosthetic. Wheelchairs, walkers and canes are now a daily way of moving around.

Being a brittle diabetic, one of the industries inventions has given hope to Scott, a CGM (Constant Glucose Monitor) is just the type of tool that can help every diabetic. Most complications from diabetes are caused by long term fluctuations of blood sugars. A CGM would give Scott a constant view of his blood sugar and the way it is trending. Alerts can be set so that action can be taken before highs and lows occur. Scott's main goal is to take care of his right leg and foot as best as possible. One of the three arteries below the knee is already non viable. The doctors have mandated he get an offloading orthotic to help with circulation.

Scott has not worked in two years, has no insurance and his long term disability has been denied. Scott needs help with purchasing a CGM, prosthetic, wheelchair, walker, canes, an offloading orthotic, safety bars and equipment for his home.

Scott's spirits have been positive throughout his struggles, some have called him a warrior, but he is concerned about the cost of all the items needed to maintain his independence. Scott's wife Jina Christeson has been by his side from the beginning except when she is working as many shifts as she can to make ends meet. The added equipment and health needs are an extra burden that will strain the limited income they survive on.
