Since 2012 RAIN has hosted a summer camp that provides social and life skill instruction for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. One of the main components of our camp is that we take our students out into the community to practice skills as they happen in natural settings. Our program allows teens with ASD to practice these skills with support in an appropriate environment. Many of our students do not get the chance to work on these skills with their peers. The key to a successful program is that community experience. This means that we need a way to transport students.
For the past two summers we have had a partnership with a local church. The church has been generous enough to allow us to rent a bus from them in order to transport our students. The amount was reasonable and it made it possible to run our summer program on our very tight budget.
Last week we found out that the church will no longer be able to rent a bus to us because of insurance changes.
Unfortunately this puts us in a bind. Our budget is small and every part of it is used to run a successful program. In order to achieve the goals and objectives of our program we need some extra help. This Go Fund Me exists to help cover the costs that paying for the extra transportation costs that will be incurred. Without this extra funding we will not be able to provide programming in the same way and it will limit the access to the community that our students have. This is detrimental to the well being of our program. Many of our students do not have other ways to have meaningful community exposure. This experience allows them to be normal teenagers for a moment for the summer. Also as a non-profit we seek to serve as many individuals as possible by keeping costs affordable. Our families are often stretched thin by the demands and extra costs that having a child with ASD entails. Increasing costs would make this unobtainable for many families. It has always been our goal to serve as many families as possible.
Please help us in any way that you can. It is our hope that this campaign is shared as much as possible. We are so appreciative of our community and are grateful for any contribution that anyone is able to make (big or small) Remember that each donation will make a direct impact on the life of a child. We wouldn't be able to do it without you. Thank you.www.richmondautism.org
