Urgent need for Maya people due to Hurricane Eta
The Maya communities of Chajul in highland Guatemala have been severely affected by the tropical storm Eta in the past days. Whole families had been killed in mudslides, some of them cannot be found after several days. Many families have lost their houses and whole their livelihoods have been taken by the rising and strong rivers due to heavy rains. Many have lost their crops and their animals, and therefore, their food for all of next year. Moreover, roads and bridges have been destroyed, cutting some communities from accessing healthcare, food and other facilities. There have been power cuts in all the region.
The Maya Ixil and K’iche’ communities of this region are one of the most vulnerable and the poorest parts of Guatemala, that painfully experienced genocide and violence during the Civil War (1960-1996). Natural disasters and climate changes impact the most here, and have severe repercussions for the indigenous peoples, the majority of whom are farmers and live in distant communities. Many of them rely on their own subsistence, and cannot afford to buy food.
This fundraiser is organized in coordination with the local Community Leaders in Chajul in order to help communities of the municipality of Chajul. They humbly ask for any collaboration you can donate, and your gesture, no matter the amount, will be extremely appreciated. Thank you!

Majowie z Chajul w Gwatemali zostali dotkliwie poszkodowani przez tropikalny huragan Eta który przetoczył się przez Amerykę Środkową w ostatnich dniach. Całe rodziny zginęły w lawinach błotnych, niektóre osoby nadal pozostają zaginione. Wiele rodzin straciło swoje domy a cały ich dobytek zabrany przez rzeki wezbrane podczas silnych deszczów. Uprawy zostały zniszczone więc nie będzie też jedzenia na cały następny rok. Oprócz tego wiele dróg i mostów zostało zniszczonych odcinając niektóre wsie od dostępu do służby zdrowia, żywności i innego typu pomocy. W całym regionie następują przerwy w dostawach prądu więc komunikacja jest utrudniona.
Majowie Ixil i K’iche’ z tego regionu są jednymi z najbiedniejszych i najbardziej zagrożonych grup w Gwatemali, boleśnie doświadczonymi przez wojnę domową (1960-96) i ludobójstwo. Katastrofy naturalne i zmiany klimatu są tu najbardziej odczuwalne i mają dotkliwe skutki dla indiańskich społeczności, które w większości polegają na własnych zbiorach i których nie stać ich na zakup jedzenia z zewnątrz.
Zbiórka jest organizowana na prośbę i w porozumieniu z lokalnymi liderami z Chajul, w celu zorganizowania pomocy dla społeczności które są częścią gminy Chajul. Z nadzieją proszą oni o wsparcie dowolną, nawet najdrobniejszą kwotą i dziękują z całego serca za każdy gest.
[ESP] Apoyo urgente para las comunidades Mayas por el Huracan Eta
Las comunidades Mayas de Chajul en el altiplano de Guatemala fueron afectadas severamente afectadas por la tormenta tropical Eta en los últimos días. Familias enteras murieron bajo los derrumbes, algunos están desaparecidos desde días. Muchas familias perdieron sus casas y todos los medios de vida fueron llevados por ríos crecientes y fuertes debido a las fuertes lluvias. Varias familias perdieron sus cultivos, animales de patio y otros, y entonces su comida para todo el año que viene.
