My name is Baholy. I’m writing this with urgency and all the hope I have, for Alexie, my niece, who is now 15 years old.

In 2022, at just 13 years old, Alexie was diagnosed with severe lupus, a rare autoimmune disease.

By April 2023, the disease had reached her kidneys. Since then, her life has changed completely. She had to stop going to school, quit basketball, and avoid the sun. She’s a teenager, but lives a life of constant hospital visits, hospitalized nearly every three weeks.

In September 2023, she started dialysis, 3 sessions per week. Thanks to a few kind donations, the costs were reduced at that time. But now, in 2025, she can only afford 2 sessions per week, entirely self-funded. Each session costs 300,000 Ariary, or about $65, with no public coverage in Madagascar. Her family does everything they can, but they are exhausted, emotionally and financially.

In November 2023, she was medically evacuated to India for a kidney biopsy. That’s when we heard the most painful truth: her kidneys are beyond repair. Her only hope is a kidney transplant.

Here’s the miracle: her mother is a compatible donor. She is ready to give her daughter life again. But the surgery must happen abroad, in a specialized hospital, and the cost is far beyond what the family can afford.

We are trying to raise €35,000 to €40,000 (around $38,000 to $44,000) to cover the transplant for Alexie and her mother, their travel, visas, accommodation, anti-rejection medication, ongoing dialysis, and post-operative care.

Alexie still smiles. She still hopes. She still dreams of going back to school, playing, laughing, and simply living like any girl her age.
