Help My Son Get the Insulin He Needs to Stay Alive.

Hi, my name is Krystal and I'm a single mother doing everything I can to support my family. Recently, our lives were turned upside down when my son, who is 21 years old, was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

What started as a simple headache turned into a medical emergency. We thought it might be an ear infection, but when we went to the hospital, doctors checked his blood sugar and found it was dangerously high — over 800. He was immediately admitted and monitored closely, nearly going into DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). It was terrifying.

He was stabilized and sent home a few days later with a life-changing diagnosis: Type 1 Diabetes. The doctors gave us a plan and the insulin he needs to survive — but then we hit a wall.

Because we live in South Carolina, once a child turns 17, they are no longer covered under Medicaid. My son lost his insurance, and now we’re left trying to find a way to pay for the insulin and supplies he needs to live.

I work full-time and travel for work to make ends meet and provide for my children, but even with insurance for myself, I can’t add my son to my plan. I’ve called countless places looking for affordable care options, sliding scale programs — but all I keep running into is red tape and dead ends.

As a Type 1 Diabetic myself, I’ve been giving him my own insulin — luckily, it’s the same kind his doctor prescribed — but it will only last for a few months. After that, I don't know what we’ll do.

That’s why I’m here, humbly asking for help.

We’re hoping to raise enough to cover him for at least a year until we can figure out something to cover the cost of insulin, blood sugar monitoring supplies, and doctor visits for the next several months while we continue fighting to get him coverage.

Insulin is not optional. It’s not a luxury. It’s life support. Without it, my son could die. Any amount — big or small — can help us keep him safe, healthy, and alive while we work toward a more stable, long-term solution.
