Urgent help needed for Debbie McHugh

My aunt, Debbie McHugh, an Elder and a member of the Squamish Nation, has worked hard her whole life to provide for her and her family. She was always the first one to help extended family, friends, and members of the community when they needed it, even if it was at her detriment. Although she faced all sorts of hardships and injustices, she always kept her head up and persevered. Now this wonderful woman is in the position of urgently needing your help.

In late 2019, Debbie gave a company, Your Tiny Homes, all the money she had been saving for retirement to build her a tiny home. She was hoping to live out her retirement years in it. Unfortunately, this company took her money and kept telling Debbie her home would be ready later, but it never was.

In June 2021, after over a year of empty promises, Debbie travelled for 2 days just to see what was going on. After confronting the owner of Your Tiny Homes, he told her he sold her home to someone else.

Debbie was not provided with another home and despite asking for her money back and telling this company she would eventually be homeless, they refuse to return her money.

While trying to deal with this situation, Debbie suffered family tragedies. In November 2020 her sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor and then passed away. Another of Debbie’s sisters has been diagnosed with a chronic disease and Debbie helps to take care of her. Finally, Debbie has been told by the owner of the home she is renting that she needs to leave as soon as possible. Debbie is having difficultly finding affordable accommodations and fears she will be homeless in the near future.

Debbie is in a difficult situation and desperately needs your help. Any amount you are able to donate will be used to help her find a place to live in the short term, and then go towards obtaining a new tiny home (from a reputable company!) so that she can live out her retirement years in the peace and security she deserves.
