Kolby presented with symptoms of a UTI and was taken to her primary vet to be seen. A urinalysis was conducted and antibiotics were prescribed. Over the course of her treatment, her symptoms were not clearing up. Kolby’s mom called her vet office again and let them know, and they told her to continue with the 14-day medication before returning to be checked. On Monday, 2/17, Kolby’s mom called her vet yet again and explained that her symptoms were persisting and was able to get an appointment for that afternoon. An X-ray was done, and it showed that Kolby had a bladder FULL of stones and needed urgent surgery. A cystotomy was performed, and Kolby’s mom picked her up with pain medication that afternoon.
Thursday morning, Kolby’s incision site had some swelling and redness, so the vet recommended Benadryl 2x per day. That same evening, Kolby’s incision had major swelling and discharge coming from the site. She was taken to the emergency vet where she was diagnosed with an infection. Scans were done to see if the infection was deeper into her abdomen or just in the incision itself. Her incision site was cleaned and flushed out, and she was given a strong antibiotic. Kolby had to be watched very closely. Saturday around 4:30 am, Kolby’s mom noticed blood and discharge coming from the surgery site and had to take her back to the emergency vet. Her incision had to be reopened and cleaned, especially the walls of the incision. Unfortunately, due to the severe swelling and inflammation, Kolby’s incision could not be closed and had to be packed and stitched on the outer edges until the swelling goes down.
Kolby will be seen again in 24 hours for a bandage change, then hopefully again in 24-48 hours to get the incision closed back up for final healing.
