My fiancé and daughter were in a car accident a couple of weeks ago due to a careless driver, who was found in the wrong and cited for causing the accident. Thankfully, they are okay and things could have been way worse, but now we are in a bind.

Due to Michigan law being a no-fault state, we are only to be paid out $3k for damages. However, we were working with the insurance company with an agent who didn’t know Michigan laws and had us thinking that insurance was going to be covering the whole amount of damages to be fixed, which was quoted close to $10k.

They had us take it to an auto shop and even did as much as had the car disassembled to quote the damage.

I was told multiple times it was going to be covered, even after we questioned it and did our research, but we chose to trust the insurance company as we aren’t too knowledgeable on a situation like this. If they were telling us it was covered, we should be able to believe that.

Well, when they went to process payment, it then made them aware that $3k is all we were allowed. The auto shop may not be able to assemble the car back together now because of the fixing process already started, and we are told that there’s nothing that can be done. The insurance money will only go towards the disassembly and the time my car spent at the shop. We are sincerely in over our heads with the financial hardship this has now caused.

The insurance company has no empathy for stringing us along this way, and when questioned on how they didn’t catch this sooner, they just kept stating it was the “law” and nothing could be done. (Which could’ve saved us a lot of time had they just said this from the start.) And also the funds out of the $3k we WOULD have gotten will need to go towards the disassembly of the car THEY approved to start work on.

So now either way we have to pay for the damages and work done and have no other options than to reach out to friends and family in hopes we can receive any kind of help.

Selling/trading the car in is not an option; too much is owed on the car. I’ve only had it for 3 years and worked so hard to get it.

If it stays any longer at the auto shop, we are entitled to pay daily, so we are at a loss for what we can do at this point. We simply are just defeated and very heartbroken at this whole situation. I’ve worked very hard for this car to have a safe vehicle to transport my daughter in and am devastated by the circumstances.
