<div>My name is Samer Nuwayhid. I am Lebanese and living with my girlfriend Olivia Marti since 2 years in Leipzig, Germany.
</div>

</div>
<div>As you may have heard on the news over the past few days, Lebanon has been under a series of relentless airstrikes and other attacks from Israel, as part of the latter‘s escalation in the ongoing war since last October.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Among the results of this has been massive-scale internal displacement, from regions that have been heavily targeted and damaged - namely South Lebanon, the Bekaa (in the north-east of the country), and Dahiye (the Southern Suburb of Beirut) - to ones that have remained safer, for the time being. The number of the displaced since last October has been estimated to be close to 500,000 (&gt;70,000 of which are from the last few days)*. Needless to say, the majority of them are families, women, children, and elderly.

<div>Lebanon is a small country, and people from all regions have friends, family and connections to people from the other regions. This has facilitated the accessibility to housing and shelter for some families. However, there is a large group of people who do not have this privilege, most of whom lack the financial means to support themselves in this arduous situation. Many of them are now taking shelter in governmental buildings, schools (which have temporarily suspended classes in order to receive and accommodate the displaced), as well as abandoned (and obviously not well-serviced) buildings. Many have nowhere to go and are staying in the streets or on the beaches.

<div>It is not possible to capture the size of the situation in a few words or pictures, but the amount of support needed is immense.
</div>

</div>
<div>In this atmosphere of displacement, chaos, and quickly changing realities - and in the wake of an already collapsed Lebanese economic system - many NGOs, initiatives and individuals across the country are taking action to provide help and support to the displaced communities.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Friends and contacts both inside and outside Lebanon are working to network, with the aim of collecting much-needed financial support for these families: for water, food, toiletries, mattresses, diapers, rent for temporary housing, etc. The list can go on. The needs are many and varying, based on the different needs of the families.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I have created this campaign with the hope of raising money for 2 initiatives:
</div>

</div>
<div>(1) The AUB Neighborhood Initiative **:
</div>
<div>I studied at AUB (The American University of Beirut) and have lived most of my life in its vicinity in Ras Beirut. The AUB Neighborhood Initiative has been, for a long time, one of the University’s many ways of giving back to the community.
</div>
<div>In the last few days, as large groups of displaced people have been forced to find new shelter, many have come to Ras Beirut. The AUB Neighborhood Initiative has been supporting and coordinating efforts to help more than 600 people sheltered in 2 school buildings in the area. This includes the providing of hot food, clothing, hygiene products, mattresses and the enormous emotional support needed as well.

<div>(2) A close friend’s individual initiative:
</div>
<div>Karam Saad is an old friend of mine, who himself is from South Lebanon. He is a long-time resident of Beirut and has always been among the activists and supporters during (the many) times of crisis in Lebanon. Working as a smaller unit, he and other friends are able to pinpoint different families that have not been able to access school shelters, and to provide them with the support and things they need.

<div>In a somewhat sadly ironic way, many in Lebanon feel “ashamed” of having to ask for support for Lebanon, in the wake of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza (as well as in many parts of the world). But at the end of the day, this is our country, and we feel a duty to act and support.
</div>

</div>
<div>I ask of people to set-aside opinions regarding the fog of the war, and to consider that any and every help for the affected civil population is needed and very much appreciated. The goal for now is modest in comparison to the scale of the damage and needs. But based on the interaction/cooperation from your kind and generous selves, as well as the results on the ground, we will hopefully have the opportunity to relieve part of the basic needs and maybe run even more campaigns.

<div>mein Name ist Samer Nuwayhid. Ich bin Libanese und lebe seit 2 Jahren mit meiner Freundin Olivia Marti in Leipzig, Deutschland.

<div>Wie ihr in den letzten Tagen vielleicht in den Nachrichten gehört habt, ist der Libanon im Zuge der Eskalation des anhaltenden Krieges seit letztem Oktober einer Reihe unerbittlicher Luftangriffe und anderer Angriffe durch Israel ausgesetzt.

<div>Zu den Folgen davon gehört eine massive Binnenvertreibung aus Regionen, die schwer angegriffen und zerstört wurden – nämlich Südlibanon, die Bekaa-Ebene (im Nordosten des Landes) und Dahiye (der südliche Vorort von Beirut) – in Richtung anderer Landesteile, die vorerst als sicherer gelten. Die Zahl der seit letztem Oktober Vertriebenen wird auf fast 500.000 geschätzt (&gt;70.000 davon in den letzten Tagen)*. Die Mehrheit von ihnen sind Familien, Frauen, Kinder und ältere Menschen.

<div>Der Libanon ist ein kleines Land und die Menschen sind eng verbunden mit Freunden und Familie in anderen Regionen. Dies hat einigen Familien den Zugang zu Obdach erleichtert. Es gibt jedoch eine große Gruppe von Menschen, die dieses Privileg nicht haben und denen es meist an den finanziellen Mitteln mangelt, um sich in dieser schwierigen Situation selbst zu versorgen. Viele von ihnen suchen jetzt Zuflucht in Regierungsgebäuden, Schulen (die vorübergehend den Unterricht eingestellt haben, um die Vertriebenen aufzunehmen) sowie in verlassenen Gebäuden in schlechtem Zustand. Viele wissen nicht wohin und übernachten auf der Straße oder am Strand.

<div>Es ist nicht möglich, das Ausmaß der Situation in wenigen Worten oder Bildern zu erfassen, aber die benötigte Unterstützung ist immens.

<div>In dieser Atmosphäre der Vertreibung, des Chaos und der sich schnell ändernden Realitäten – und infolge eines bereits zusammengebrochenen libanesischen Wirtschaftssystems – ergreifen viele NGOs, Initiativen und Einzelpersonen im ganzen Land Maßnahmen, um den Vertriebenen Hilfe und Unterstützung zu bieten.

<div>Freunde und Kontakte von mir im Libanon und im Ausland arbeiten daran, ein Netzwerk aufzubauen, um dringend benötigte finanzielle Unterstützung für Menschen zu sammeln: für Wasser, Lebensmittel, Hygieneartikel, Matratzen, Windeln, Miete für eine Übergangswohnung usw. Die Liste ließe sich beliebig fortsetzen. Der Bedarf ist vielfältig und variiert je nach den unterschiedlichen Bedürfnissen der Familien.

<div>Ich habe diese Kampagne ins Leben gerufen, um Geld für zwei Initiativen zu sammeln:

<div>(1) Die Nachbarschaftsinitiative der AUB**:
</div>
<div>Ich habe an der AUB (The American University of Beirut) studiert und den Großteil meines Lebens in ihrer Nähe in Ras Beirut verbracht. Die Nachbarschaftsinitiative der AUB ist seit langem eine der vielen Möglichkeiten der Universität, der Gemeinschaft etwas zurückzugeben.

<div>In den letzten Tagen sind große Gruppen von Vertriebenen auf der Suche nach einer neuen Unterkunft nach Ras Beirut gekommen. Die Nachbarschaftsinitiative der AUB unterstützt und koordiniert die Bemühungen, mehr als 600 Menschen zu helfen, die in zwei Schulgebäuden des Stadtteils untergebracht sind. Dazu gehört die Bereitstellung warmer Mahlzeiten, Kleidung, Hygieneprodukten, Matratzen und auch emotionaler Support.

<div>(2) Die persönliche Initiative eines engen Freundes:

<div>Karam Saad ist ein alter Freund von mir, der selbst aus dem Südlibanon stammt. Er lebt seit langem in Beirut und war während der vielen Krisenzeiten im Libanon immer unter den Aktivisten und Unterstützern. Er und andere Freunde haben verschiedene Familien ausfindiggemacht, die keinen Zugang zu Schulunterkünften haben und versuchen ihnen Güter des täglichen Bedarfs sowie weitere Unterstützung zu bieten, die sie brauchen.

<div>Angesichts der verheerenden Krise in Gaza und in anderen Teilen der Welt schämen sich viele Libanesen, um Unterstützung für den Libanon bitten zu müssen. Aber letztendlich ist dies unser Land und wir möchten handeln und helfen.

<div>Ich bitte euch daher um eure Spende - unabhängig von eurer persönlichen Meinung zu diesem Krieg, denn jede Hilfe für die betroffene Zivilbevölkerung wird dringend benötigt und hoch geschätzt. Das Ziel ist angesichts des Ausmaßes der Schäden und der Bedürfnisse bescheiden. Aber mit eurer Hilfe und in Zusammenarbeit mit den Menschen vor Ort werden wir hoffentlich die Möglichkeit haben, das Leid ein wenig zu lindern und ggfs. weitere Kampagnen durchzuführen.
