Much loved teacher Judy Nel needs hip operation
Donation protected
For over 3 years science teacher Judy Nel has been on the waiting list for a hip replacement operation through the South African state hospitals. Unfortunately the hospitals are now under such pressure with Covid19, Judy's operation cannot be scheduled for the foreseeable future.
Last month (Friday July 24th 2020) Judy heard that her hip has now deteriorated to such an extent, that unless she is able to have a hip replacement operation as soon as possible, it will mean she will be wheelchair bound going forward. This besides the fact that until the operation is complete, Judy faces an arduous daily struggle to try and deal with the extreme pain her current condition causes. The pain has got so bad that Judy can no longer continue teaching until she has had the operation.
As her students would tell you, Judy Nel is one of the most exciting & dedicated science & language teachers one could ever wish to have! Many will also remember Judy Nel from Rhodes University where she studied from 1977 until 1981. Judy now lives in Port Elizabeth South Africa where she assists her disabled sister Lisette.
Friends of Judy in the UK are assisting Lisette in the organising & running this fundraiser. Besides donations, any ideas might have to raise awareness of this GoFundMe will be so welcomed. Contact us via this or the facebook link below!
Friends of Judy are hoping to raise enough to allow Judy to undergo the operation privately. Judy has been quoted £10 820.43 (R 216,408.60) to have the operation. (Please see breakdown of figures at end of this article & link to actual quote) . We have set the target at £15 000 (R300 000) to help Judy and Lisette with any unexpected contingencies, physiotherapy, post operative care & day to day living costs while in recovery.
Judy is currently living with her disabled sister Lisette in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Lisette suffered polio as a child in Zimbabwe and already has to use a wheelchair. So the operation is also essential so that Judy can regain her mobility to be able to assist Lisette. Judy was a secondary school science teacher for many years in South Africa & in London UK. She returned to South Africa from the UK in 2011 to be closer to her sister and to assist with care of their elderly mother.
It's been really tough for Judy & her sister Lisette, as the pain for Judy has been so severe & mobility so limited, she has already needed to use a wheelchair while awaiting an operation. As mentioned these difficulties are compounded as Lisette is already wheelchair bound having suffered polio as a child. The operation will give Judy the chance to regain her mobility & to get about without a wheelchair & to be free of the pain Judy is now suffering on a daily basis.
We have created a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HelpFundJudyNelOperation/ where we will provide more information to keep you updated on the fund's progress & how Judy is doing. Judy will see any comments left on the page and will be able to respond there to you as well. Please 'like' & share the page to help us get the word out there!
Sue Keavy, special needs teacher, friend & colleague of Judy for many years is in charge of all funds raised. Sue will ensure that all donations will be transferred so that Judy is able to pay the private hospital & service providers such as the surgeon, as well as to assist Judy whilst in recovery.
Let's get Judy up and about again, so she can keep bringing joy to the lives of so many students as she helps them to fulfil their brilliant potential!
