Workshops in Progress from Upstream

We need you!

Upstream Artists' Collective is raising some funds for two amazing workshops coming to you in April and May.

Help us to make these stories of humans against nature come to life. We produce theater, along with our amazing partners, in sustainable ways with an eco-arts aesthetic. We produce theater about our human relationship to a rapidly changing world.

With your help we bring to you exciting work in development in the greenest ways possible.

The Performance Project at University Settlement presents an Upstream Artists’ Collective production of TRASH LORD: DOMESTICATION by Sophia Valera Heinecke

Produced by Upstream Artists’ Collective and Experimental Bitch

Explores the politics of self-sacrifice and modern relationships that is both poetic and provocative as Sophia, a scavenger by nature, invites you in to observe a gender experiment conducted by Jane Goodall that pits sociology against biology. How far will one woman go to modify her behavior in the hopes of finding a partner?

and

ROY SULLIVAN: LIGHTNING MAN a new musical by Benjamin Weiner
A new flash musical that uses a barn stomping electro-folk score to tell the true story of Roy Sullivan, a Virginia man who was struck by lightning seven times throughout his life. The electrifying new work explores love, our relationship with the natural world, and our own inevitable fate.

More on us:

Upstream Artists’ Collective is a group of interdisciplinary artists making theater with an environmental conscience, seeking to reexamine what it means to be human on a global scale. Upstream develops new work via conventional and devised processes, and reimagines existing work with an eco-arts aesthetic. upstreamartistscollective.org

Experimental Bitch Presents is a risk-taking organization that does not play it safe. We are proud to be a space-finding, opportunity-making, education-seeking, diverse agent. We are not perfect; we willingly put ourselves at the center of controversial questioning and forward-thinking movements in an effort to progress past the elitist academic structures with enable art production. By re-claiming the title of “bitch” and blowing up the barriers surrounding femininity, feminism and the hierarchies within sexuality and gender, EBP celebrates the bitch in each of you. Face your fear. Face the bitch. Love the bitch. experimentalbitchpresents.squarespace.com/

The Performance Project at University Settlement answers the call to mentor, encourage, and diversify our art makers, leaders, educators and students. Since 2007, The Performance Project has been offering local young artists and professional emerging artists opportunities to connect, create and publicly present new work. We support artists who are interested in how live art can heal, empower and activate. The artists we work with commit to organizational and creative practices that promote trust, imagination and power-sharing. Our incubator for the next generation of citizen artists is fueled by our distinct, yet connected, cohorts: the Artist-in-Residency for Professional Emerging Artists, The Play Tank Fellowship for Young Adult Artists, and our annual Group Performance Intensive for Young Artists. We also host other community ensembles and dynamic guest artists seeking an affordable and supportive opportunity to self-produce their work.

WHERE'S THE MONEY GOING?

Upstream pays for people and not things. Everything donated contributes directly to paying a liveable wage for our artists. Naturally there's some other costs as well and here is the breakdown:

Artist stipends: $5,000
Space: $1500 ( a steep, generous discount from both spaces)
Materials: $500

These materials are primarily for marketing materials, printing, and things that just can't be found in the trash.
