Upgrade of Community Hall

Pearl Beach is a small coastal village situated approximately 40km due north of the Sydney CBD (92km by road), but separated from the city by Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury River.

The Pearl Beach Progress Association was established in 1929, and grew out of informal gatherings of residents to discuss local problems and community projects. In 1943 members of the Association raised sufficient funds to purchase a vacant block to construct a community hall which hosted its first function in 1949. but was not officially opened until 1950.  So this year marks the 70th anniversary of our Hall – an important occasion! (Click here for full history)

The Hall has been upgraded and enlarged several times since to accommodate larger gatherings and functions, especially dances. Today it continues to be the heart of the Pearl Beach community and is used by community groups, Association meetings and community events including musical concerts, Yoga, Pilates, ANZAC Day ceremonies, book fairs, film nights, art and craft workshops/shows and preschool play groups.

More details of what our Hall has to offer can be found here.

Many of the events make use of the halls rear terrace, the problem is that the terrace is undersized and unroofed. Temporary shelters are often required to protect users of the Hall.

Pearl Beach Progress Association is therefore raising funds to make alterations and additions to our Hall that include:

·  Alterations to the rear deck by increasing its depth and new wider steps to provide improved connectivity with the garden;

·  Roof over an enlarged rear deck to provide shade and weather protection;

·  Extension to eastern end of toilets to provide new level access store room for heavy items, chairs etc;

·  Walkway on the south side to directly connect the Hall to the rear deck;

·  General repairs and maintenance work to the Hall around the area of the proposed additions.

These alterations and additions are intended to:

·  Improve an existing local community and cultural facility (i.e. the Pearl Beach Community Hall) for increased utilisation and functionality.

·  Enhance the facility (the Hall) to be more flexible and adaptable to better meet community needs and expectations.

·  Improve facilities and community spaces which cultivate learning and knowledge. The Hall is regularly used for talks and film nights, including films about Aboriginal culture and history, which are well attended and are important educational initiatives. These events attract participants from well beyond the Pearl Beach community.

The Association has applied for and been successful in getting a Central Coast Council Community grant to cover the major part of the work of the work and normally would hold events to help fund the remainder. Unfortunately COVID-19 has a major impact on fundraising events, hence the need to use GoFundMe as an alternative method. Therefore any financial contribution you can provide through GoFundMe to support this project would really help the Association to carry out this project this year of the 70th anniversary of the Hall.
