Help to give 56 orphans in Tanzania a future

(DEUTSCHE VERSION UNTEN)

"There are many ways to help. Doing it together is one of them"

Our Story

I met Godfrey about 2 years ago and have visited him and the orphans he has taken in a few times since then. In this short time, he has become a very good friend and I admire his dedication and commitment to the many children who have found their way to Upendo Face Orphanage in many different ways, with many different destinies.

Godfrey, growing up without parents, had to experience early on what it means to be on his own. But he also got to know the other side of life. An older woman took the street boy in, gave him a roof over his head, food and thanks to her, he could even go to school one day. Meanwhile this little orphan boy is 29 years old and his own fate has moved Godfrey to give something back to the world and to our little ones. He opened an orphanage and later on a small school. He now employs a small team of great, loving locals who are dedicated to the children and give their best every day.

Currently 56 children go to school at Upendo Face Orphanage during the week. They receive free education and 2-3 meals a day. 15 of the children live in the orphanage itself. All others live with relatives who are still there or have found a family in the area that has taken them in.

About my person

My name is Corinne Ulmann. I spent almost 15 months in Africa in 2018/2019, 9 of them in Tanzania.
I come from Switzerland and when I’m here, I work as a nurse in an emergency ward in the hospital.

I spent a lot of time with Godfrey, his team and the children and the words: cohesion, empathy and appreciation suddenly took on a face for me. The solidarity of the locals in the area is huge, despite the poorest conditions. From the very beginning I was impressed by the great togetherness in this small area in Tanzania, which is called "Machumba". But despite everything, the times there are hard, and the money is scarce. Therefore, I started this campaign for my dear friend Godfrey and his children, to whom he has given a home, warm meals, education and thus a perspective for their future, which they would never have had without him.

Our aim

At the moment we live exclusively from donations and try to cover the monthly costs for the basic needs of the children such as food or clean drinking water. Unfortunately, our funds are not always sufficient. However, our long-term goal is to use the fertile land and become partially self-sufficient one day. Just like many farmers in Tanzania have become self-sufficient for the most part. We are aware that there’s a long way ahead of us, but the first step has only just been taken. We were able to buy a piece of land and started growing maize this March. It would be great if we could expand our garden with your help and plant more vegetables and fruits besides the basic foodstuff maize.

In the times of the coronavirus

Unfortunately, my fears have come true in the last few days. The coronavirus has also arrived in Tanzania. Last week, all schools across the country were closed. For our orphanage this means that since March 21, not only the usual 15 children have been living with us, but currently a total of 42 children. These additional children originally lived in our orphanage but thanks to sponsors they were able to attend a better school, a boarding school, and live there most of the year. Of course, this school has been closed and since many of these children have no close relatives or other people to go to, they have been brought back to Upendo Face Orphanage.

Therefore, we need your support not only for the above-mentioned goals, but also to get through the current crisis in the world. I would have flown back to Tanzania for a few months now at the end of March. Unfortunately, this is not possible due to the current situation at the moment. So, I try to support Godfrey and the children from Switzerland as much as I can. If you would like to help: Karibu sana! This is Swahili and means "Welcome".

Have you always wanted to donate money, but were unsure where to go?

I must say, I felt the same way. In my time in Africa I have seen many people who would do good things and need support, but I decided to concentrate on the Upendo Face Orphanage in the future. I like the idea behind it, the solidarity in the area around the orphanage, the commitment of Godfrey and that he never gives up no matter how difficult times are. I like how he raises the children, how he lets them be children, but still prepares them for the challenging life in Tanzania. I like the values he shares with them. That you can't get ahead in life without diligence and that you should never lose your good heart, despite the many stones that life sometimes puts in your way.

You are invited to join me and support the Upendo Face Orphanage. It’s a really good organisation. I promise. I’m in close contact with Godfrey and also (as far as conditions allow) regularly on site in Tanzania to make sure that the donations are used in the most sensible way.

Basically, we need your donation for:

- Food and clean drinking water
- Clothing
- Hygiene products
- School material
- Monthly salary for our two teachers

Good to know

Currently, we have set our donation target at $12,000, which is exactly the same as our annual budget to cover the most important costs at the orphanage. This means: With a normal number of children of 56 (not in times of Corona) we need a monthly budget of almost 1000 USD to provide the children with a balanced nutrition and education. That is about 18 USD per month per child.

But it has to be said that regular donations would support us the most. Firstly, the budget is a bit higher due to the increased number of children and secondly, with 1000 USD per month only the minimum basic needs of the children are covered. This means that additional extras like visiting a doctor or even a dessert sometimes (in Tanzania mainly fruits) are not included in the 1000 USD, let alone the running of our small farm.

More questions?

You can contact me (German and English) or Godfrey (English) at any time. Personally, I am not active on social media, but Godfrey is. Follow him on Facebook or Instagram or contact him at [email redacted].

If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with me over GoFundMe.

I decided to call for donations via GoFundMe in order to reach as many people as possible and thus also the goal of being able to offer the Upendo Face Orphanage the necessary support in the long term. We don't have our own website at the moment. However, this is under development and will enable you to send your donations directly to the orphanage in the future. Of course you can already donate directly to our account in Tanzania. This is the fastest way for Upendo Face Orphanage to receive your money.

(DEUTSCHE VERSION)

„Es gibt viele Wege zu helfen. Es gemeinsam angehen ist einer davon “

Unsere Geschichte
