As part of my race, I am proudly supporting Fathers in Action, a cause I find both inspiring and important to our community.
While volunteering at the hospital and waiting for his MRI, I got to know Mr. Jeffery Threatt, one of the kindest and most charismatic patients I have ever met. What first began as small talk evolved into a meaning conversation about our lives and future aspirations. I quickly learned that Mr. Threatt was the CEO and founder of Fathers in Action, an organization he started after he struggled as a young father with poverty, poor housing, unemployment, alcohol/drugs, legal issues... The list went on. After losing custody of his children (9 of them, the youngest with autism) and witnessing the incarceration of his oldest two sons, he made the decision to improve himself and his family. However, he could not find a local organization, and the courts were no help. With the mentality that if he got better, he would be a better example for his children, he decided to commit himself to becoming a more involved and better father. Starting in his own home, he hoped that his attitude could spread and reach the entire community, so all father could be mentors for the children of West Philadelphia and beyond. Thus began Fathers in Action (FIA), a community-based, experience-inspired support system for fathers from all walks of life. With knowledge about the barriers and issues father experience in society (especially in West Philadelphia), FIA helps father overcome them while simultaneously developing fathers and local leaders. United by fatherhood and the ultimate goal of being a better father, FIA supports these fathers by offering fatherhood and relationship workshops, mentoring services 24/7, custody and visitation strategies, employment training programs, re-entry referrals, father-and-child activities and events, and the oppounirty for 6-month and yearly cash supports for fathers who show diligence and change in their lives for their children.
At the end of my volunteer shift, Jeffery came up to my triage and gave me his business card, hoping that one day we could connect outside of the hospital. I reached out to him over the summer, and here I am today, over six months later, still in contact with Jeffery and the other wonderful members of the FIA board. This semester, Katie Schlager and I have partnered with Jeffery and Fathers in Action to raise money for a cause that will undeniably make a powerful impact on our local community.
In just three weeks, I will be running the Philadelphia marathon. I am especially motivated because my love of running will benefit a worthy cause and will go directly to Fathers in Action. Any amount is beyond generous, and on behalf of everyone involved in FIA, any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for supporting me, Fathers in Action, and our community, I truly believe that one man can change the world, and that it can start right here in West Philly!
