Hi I’m Mandy Kaur. I’m a small business owner from Gosford on the NSW Central Coast. I’m a Mum to two beautiful children, aged 2 and 4.
Recently, my father visited me from India, following the death of my mother last year. At 67 years of age, he has been blessed with good health, but in early January, just after he arrived in Australia, he began experiencing chest pains, and we took him immediately to the emergency room at Gosford Hospital. During the examination, he suffered a major heart attack, and after further tests, it was confirmed that he needed immediate triple bypass surgery, then being airlifted by helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
Gratefully, my father survived the life-saving operation, and received great care from the doctors and nurses, and is now making a slow but steady recovery.
My father had the presence of mind to take out travel insurance, prior to arriving in Australia, but unfortunately the coverage for a heart attack is for only up to 60% of the costs incurred. I am now beginning to receive the bills from the hospital, the specialists and pathology, which are already amounting to $15,000, with more to come. As a single mother, with 2 children in day care, trying to keep a local small business running, and without any financial support from their father, this will be devastating financially for me, my father and my young family.
