<div>Vor etwa 33 Jahren gründeten meine Eltern das Geschäft 'Mundo Lindo' mit fair gehandelten Waren aus aller Welt. Sie bereisten nahezu jeden Kontinent und bekamen ihr erstes von insgesamt vier Kindern in Guatemala. Beeindruckt von den bunten und schönen guatemaltekischen Kunsthandwerken beschlossen sie kurzerhand, diese nach Deutschland zu bringen und dort zu verkaufen. Auf Märkten erwarben sie handgefertigte Waren von stets denselben Familien, die im Laufe der Zeit zu langjährigen Freunden wurden. Dadurch ermöglichten sie den oft sehr armen Händlern Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. Zudem unterstützten sie mit ihrem Geschäft ein Projekt, das Kinder von der Straße holt und ihnen Zugang zum Schulunterricht sowie täglich warmen Mahlzeiten verschafft.

<div>Die bereits vor der Pandemie schwierigen Umstände für kleine Unternehmen wurden durch die globalen Ereignisse drastisch verschärft. Der Fairtrade-Shop meiner Eltern, der hauptsächlich vom Großhandel sowie von Märkten und Messen lebt, wurde finanziell schwer getroffen. Der Wegfall zahlreicher Veranstaltungen wie Weihnachtsmärkte und Messen, der Verlust einiger Abnehmer und die steigenden Frachtkosten bedrohten die Zukunft des Geschäfts meiner Eltern. Kurz nach Beginn der Pandemie erlitt mein Vater einen Schlaganfall, und meine Schwestern und ich mussten neben unserer Ausbildung das Geschäft am Laufen halten, da meine Mutter es nicht alleine schaffen konnte.

<div>Um das Geschäft zu retten, wurden die Kosten künstlich über Wasser gehalten. Wir mussten einen Kredit auf unser Haus aufnehmen, und Freunde versuchten, uns finanziell durch Leihgaben zu unterstützen. So wurden die Schulden immer größer. Im Sommer 2023 mussten wir schließlich den langjährig geführten Laden und das Lager meiner Eltern schließen. Die Corona-Hilfe von über 7000 €, mit der wir teilweise die Ladenmiete decken konnten, muss nun ebenfalls zurückgezahlt werden.

<div>Unsere Mutter ließ sich jedoch nicht unterkriegen. Mit 59 Jahren fasste sie all ihren Mut zusammen und schlug einen ganz anderen Weg ein. Sie machte eine Umschulung zur Integrationsbegleiterin und begann ein neues Kapitel in ihrem Leben. So arbeitete sie Anfang 2022 für einen gemeinnützigen Verein, der durch viele tolle Projekte geflüchteten Menschen hilft, sich in Deutschland zu integrieren. Sie war erfüllt, und wir waren unglaublich stolz auf unsere Mutter.

<div>Jedoch folgte wenige Monate später der nächste Schicksalsschlag: Meine Mutter bekam die Diagnose Brustkrebs. Wir hofften, dass eine Operation und Chemo ausreichen würden, aber bei genauerer Untersuchung fanden die Ärzte heraus, dass der Krebs bereits in Knochen, Leber und Lymphknoten gestreut hatte. Die anfänglich kleine Hoffnung war zerplatzt. Obwohl es meinem Vater gesundheitlich langsam besser ging, gaben die Ärzte unserer Mutter maximal fünf Jahre restliche Lebenszeit. Das war ein großer Schock für uns alle.

<div>Die Chemo schlug jedoch überraschend gut an, und es konnten keine Tumore mehr festgestellt werden. Wir hatten wieder Hoffnung, und die Ärzte sprachen von einer Remission, nannten sie 'das Wunder vom Krankenhaus'. Wir waren unglaublich froh über die gewonnene Zeit mit unserer Mutter. Sie fasste neuen Mut, entschied sich zu ihrem vorherigen Job als Integrationsbegleiterin zurückzukehren und wurde nach wenigen Monaten sogar befördert.

<div>Anfang Dezember 2023 fuhr ich mit meiner Mutter und den Bewohnern der Geflüchtetenunterkunft, in der sie arbeitet, zu einer Bildungsreise nach Berlin. Wir feierten dort ihren 61. Geburtstag und hatten einen wunderschönen Tag - sie war endlich wieder glücklich. Am Tag nach ihrem Geburtstag hatten wir alle eine Besichtigung des Bundestags mit einer Kuppelbesteigung geplant. Dort erlitt meine Mutter einen epileptischen Anfall und musste ins Krankenhaus gebracht werden. Nach Untersuchungen fand man über zehn Metastasen in ihrem Gehirn.

<div>Sie begann sofort mit einer Strahlentherapie. Leider muss jedoch aufgrund der Vielzahl der Metastasen ihr gesamtes Gehirn bestrahlt werden, was sowohl ihre kognitiven als auch physischen Fähigkeiten umso mehr beeinträchtigt. Zusätzlich leidet sie unter den Nebenwirkungen der Strahlentherapie und der zahlreichen Medikamente, weshalb sie eine 24-Stunden-Betreuung benötigt, die wir vier Schwestern derzeit übernehmen. Die Ärzte können uns noch keine endgültige Diagnose geben. Unser Vater konnte den Stress und die ständige Angst um das Leben unserer Mutter nicht mehr bewältigen, und wir mussten ihn kurz vor Weihnachten in eine Klinik bringen. Es war einfach alles zu viel.

<div>Wie sollen wir all diese Probleme bloß bewältigen? Mein Vater bekommt monatlich 150 € Rente, meine Mutter nun wieder Krankengeld, und da sie voraussichtlich nicht mehr in der Lage sein wird zu arbeiten, wird sie frühzeitig in Rente gehen müssen. Diese wird relativ gering ausfallen, da sie fast ihr gesamtes Leben selbstständig war. Wenn wir den Kredit bei der Bank, die Corona-Hilfe und die Schulden bei unseren Freunden nicht zahlen können, verlieren wir unser Haus. Das ist das Zuhause, in dem meine kleine Schwester geboren wurde und das seit Jahrzehnten in unserem Familienbesitz ist. Das Einzige, was unserer Familie im Moment noch Geborgenheit und Sicherheit gibt.

<div>Bitte helft uns, diese schwere Zeit zu überwinden, damit wir die Schulden unserer Eltern bezahlen können und die letzte Zeit, die wir mit unserer Mama noch haben, genießen können. Die Schulden lassen unsere Eltern nicht mehr schlafen, und insbesondere unsere Mutter möchte nicht von dieser Welt gehen, mit der Gewissheit, dass sie diese an ihre Töchter überträgt, die gerade erst ihr eigenes Leben in die Hand nehmen.

<div>Unsere Eltern haben sich jahrelang für andere eingesetzt und geholfen, wo sie nur konnten, und jetzt ist der Zeitpunkt gekommen, an dem sie selbst Hilfe benötigen. Unsere Mutter braucht jetzt all ihre Kraft, und diese Existenzängste halten uns momentan davon ab, eine qualitativ gute Zeit zusammen zu verbringen. Zeit ist leider ein Luxus, den wir im Moment nicht haben.

<div>About 33 years ago, my parents founded their store 'Mundo Lindo' selling fair trade goods from all over the world. After travelling to almost every continent they had their first of four children in Guatemala. Impressed by the colorful and beautiful Guatemalan handicrafts, they decided without further ado to import these to Germany to sell them at markets. They deliberately chose to purchase handmade goods exclusively from the same families. In doing so, they were able to provide consistent support for these often-impoverished artisans trying to support the principle of helping people help themselves. This commitment transformed casual acquaintances into lifelong friends. Furthermore, they also supported a project, based in Guatemala which enables children that have to work from an early age to support their family to attend school and also provides daily warm meals thereby aiming to break a vicious cycle allowing for a brighter future. My parents aimed to make a difference in this world rather than creating a company that is solely focused on profits and they really did.

<div>Unfortunately, the circumstances, already challenging for a small business, worsened significantly due to the corona pandemic. My parents' Fairtrade shop, heavily reliant on wholesale, markets and trade fairs, suffered severe financial setbacks. The absence of numerous events like Christmas markets, fairs, and the loss of a number of clients that struggled themselves through this hard time, coupled with rising freight costs threatened the future of my parents' business. To make things worse, my father suffered a stroke shortly after the start of the pandemic and my sisters and I had to help keep the business running alongside our studies and work, as my mother couldn't manage it alone.
</div>

<div>Attempting to save the business, the costs were artificially kept afloat. My parents had to take out a mortgage on our family house and friends tried to support us financially through loans, which lead to the accumulation of debts. In the summer of 2023, we ultimately had to close the showroom and warehouse of the business that my parents had run for over thirty years. And now the COVID aid of over €7000 that they believed to be a non-repayable government grant, which partially covered the rent for the shop during a time of minimal income, needs to be repaid as well.

<div>Despite the bleak situation, our mother did not give up and at the age of 59 she started a new chapter in her life. She gathered all her courage and decided to attend a retraining programming, still holding on to her desire to help people she studied to become an integration counselor. By early 2022, she started working for a non-profit organization helping refugees to integrate into Germany through many great projects. She was fulfilled by her new job, and we were incredibly proud of our mother.

<div>Unfortunately, we can’t seem to catch a break as a few months later my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. We hoped that through surgery and chemotherapy she could be healed, but further examinations revealed that the cancer had already spread to the bones, liver, and lymph nodes. The initial glimpse of hope vanished. Although my father's health was slowly improving, doctors gave our mother a maximum of five years to live. That was a big shock for all of us.

<div>Surprisingly, the chemotherapy had a positive effect and no more tumors could be detected. We regained hope and the doctors spoke of a remission, calling my mom 'the miracle of the hospital'. We were incredibly happy and grateful for the additional time we had gained with our mother. She regained her courage, decided to return to her previous job as an integration support worker and was even promoted after a few months.

<div>In early December 2023, I accompanied my mother and the residents of the refugee facility where she works on an educational trip to Berlin. We celebrated her 61st birthday there and had a wonderful day - she was finally happy again. The day after her birthday, we all visited the Bundestag (the national parliament of Germany) where my mother suffered an epileptic seizure during the guided tour and had to be taken to hospital. After several examinations the doctors confirmed that over ten metastases were found in her brain.
</div>

<div>She immediately started radiation therapy, but due to the multitude of metastases, her entire brain had to be exposed to the radiation as opposed to treating only a localized part of the brain. The radiation is significantly affecting both her cognitive and physical abilities. Additionally, she is suffering from numerous side effects from the radiation therapy and medications, requiring 24-hour care, which my three sisters and I are currently providing. The doctors cannot give us a definitive diagnosis yet. Unfortunately our father could no longer cope with the stress and the constant fear for our mother's life, and we had admit him to a clinic just before Christmas. It was all too much for him.

<div>How are we supposed to cope with all these problems? My father receives a monthly pension of €150, my mother is now back on sick leave, and since she is expected to be unable to work, she will have to retire early. Her pension will be relatively low, as she was self-employed for most of her life. If we can't repay the loan from the bank, the COVID aid and the debts to our friends, we will lose our house. This is the home where my youngest sister was born, and which has been in our family’s possession for decades. It is the only thing providing our family with a sense of security and comfort right now.
</div>

<div>Please help us overcome this difficult time so that we can pay off our parents' debts and enjoy the time we have left with our mom. The debts keep our parents awake at night, and especially our mother does not want to leave this world knowing that she is passing on her burden to her daughters who are just starting to live their own lives.
</div>

<div>Our parents have dedicated years to caring for others and helping out wherever they could, and now is the time they need help themselves. Our mother needs all her strength now, and these existential fears are currently preventing us from spending quality time together. Unfortunately, time is a luxury we no longer have.
</div>
