Precarious migrant workers fighting for equality need your help
After months of strikes, outsourced workers at the University of London are nearing a historic victory that could see them bring to an end structural discrimination that has gone on for years.
These precarious migrant workers have been demanding since last year to be made direct employees of the university, but all attempts by themselves and their chosen union, the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), to open a dialogue with the university have gone unheeded.
The University's intransigence has not impeded the campaign from growing, and as support from other staff, unions and politicians continues to pile in, more and more outsourced workers are joining the fight.
This culminated in April when over 100 workers went on the biggest-ever outsourced workers strike in higher education history. Their relentless campaigning pushed the university to announce some days later that it would start a process to end outsourcing, but without a clear commitment on when the workers will be brought in-house, they risk being left in limbo interminably. So the workers are determined to keep on fighting and striking until they have a clear timeline.
Sadly, for these workers going on strike means that they lose out on a day’s pay. That’s why we need your help. Your donation will allow them to be compensated for some of the pay they are docked for standing-up for equality at work. No worker should be put in the position of having to decide between standing up for their rights, and feeding their family.
For years these workers have been denied the rights that the university bestows on those it directly employs. Outsourced workers suffer from worse pensions, holiday pay, sick pay and paternal leave than those directly employed by the university. They are also more likely to suffer from discrimination, bullying and illegal deduction of wages.
The campaign demands that the University of London:
1) End outsourcing and bring in-house all outsourced workers on the same terms and conditions as other directly employed staff within 12 months
2) End zero-hours contracts.
3) That it implement pay rises that it has promised but failed to deliver.
