Op de foto voor deze inzamelingscampagne sta ik naast Martin Woisso uit Tanzania. We vieren hier het feit dat, na een moeizaam traject, Martin zijn studie visum voor Canada toegewezen heeft gekregen. Hierdoor kan hij beginnen aan zijn studie aan de international college of Manitoba in Winnipeg Canada. Deze studie in Canada betekent voor Martin de kans om zijn enorme intellectuele potentie verder te ontwikkelen. Zijn droom is om door middel van deze studie de kennis en vaardigheden te ontwikkelen die hij nodig heeft om een betekenisvolle bijdrage te leveren aan de ontwikkeling van zijn thuisland Tanzania.
Martin heeft geen makkelijk leven gehad. Zijn ouders gingen kort na zijn geboorte in 1998 uit elkaar. Zijn moeder heeft hem alleen en met zeer beperkte middelen opgevoed. Vaak was er al niet genoeg geld voor meer dan 1 maaltijd per dag laat staan voor een duur school uniform. Het was dan ook pas 2005 toen Martin voor het eerst naar school ging. Hier werd het al snel duidelijk dat Martin zeer begaafd was. Al snel onderscheidde hij zichzelf als de beste leerling in zijn klas en een jaar later kreeg hij hierdoor de kans om naar de prestigieuze St. Jude school te gaan. Een school waar begaafde maar arme kinderen onderwijs van hoge kwaliteit krijgen. Martin werd uit meer dan 1000 kinderen geselecteerd en blonk ook op St. Jude uit als een excellente leerling.
Na zijn tijd op St. Jude liep Martin tegen een barriere op waar zoveel getalenteerd Afrikaanse jongeren vroeger of later mee te maken krijgen. Een gebrek aan lokale kansen en een gebrek aan persoonlijke middelen. In Tanzania is een groot gebrek aan hoger onderwijs van hoge kwaliteit en dergelijk onderwijs in het buitenland is voor de meeste Tanzanianen onbetaalbaar. Ik ken Martin inmiddels een kleine 3 jaar en ik ben overtuigd van zijn enorme potentieel. In Canada, zal hij onderwijs van hoge kwaliteit krijgen. Onderwijs dat in Tanzania niet beschikbaar is. Helaas is dit onderwijs duur. Het zal ongeveer 20.000 euro kosten om de eerste twee jaar van zijn studie te bekostigen. Dit geld is nodig voor zowel het onderwijs als om in zijn onderhoud te voorzien. Martin is vastbesloten om tijdens zijn studie in Canada te excelleren, zoals hij dat zijn gehele academische carriere heeft gedaan. Daarmee hoopt en verwacht hij na deze twee jaar verder te kunnen studeren door het behalen van een studiebeurs.
Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat het helpen verwezenlijken van het potentieel van mensen als Martin de sleutel is tot de nodige ontwikkeling van Tanzania en andere Afrikaanse landen. Ik wil jullie bij deze dan ook vragen om, als je het bovenstaande hebt gelezen en iets kunt missen, een bijdrage te leveren om Martin zijn studie te bekostigen. Daarnaast zou het een enorme hulp zijn als jullie dit verhalen willen delen met vrienden en familie waarvan jullie denken dat deze de kans om een getalenteerde jongen als Martin te helpen zouden waarderen. On the photo for this fundraising campaign, I am standing next to Martin Woisso from Tanzania. We were celebrating the fact that, after some struggles, Martin had obtained a visa to study at the international college of Manitoba in Winnipeg Canada. Studying in Canada will allow Martin to develop the enormous intellectual potential he has and will help him develop the knowledge and skills to fulfill his dream of making a meaningful contribution to the development of his native country of Tanzania.
Martin has not had an easy life. Martin's parents separated shortly after his birth in 1998. Raised by a single mother in serious poverty he has known times where it was uncertain his mother could get enough money together to pay for their next meal let alone his education. It was only in 2005 that Martin was first able to attend any formal education. It quickly became clear that Martin was intellectually very gifted. It was not long before he proved himself to be the brightest student in his class. A year later he got the opportunity to compete for a position at the prestigious St. Jude school. Out of more than a 1000 children he was selected to attend this school. At St. Judes, where the competition was considerably more formidable he remained at the top of his class.
After St. Judes Martin's talent and ambition hit a wall so many talented children in Africa hit at some point in their lives. A lack of local opportunity and a lack of personal means. I have known Martin for 3 years now and am convinced that he has incredible potential. In Canada, he can get a high-quality education that is unavailable to him in Tanzania. Unfortunately, this education will be costly. Martin will need approximately 20.000 euro's to fund his first two years of studying in Canada. This will cover the cost of his education and the cost of living. Martin is committed to stand out academically, as he has done all his life, and following these two years, he will strive to obtain a scholarship to fund further studies.
I believe unlocking the potential of people like Martin is what will eventually bring Tanzania the development it so desperately needs. I humbly request those who have taken the trouble to read the above to contribute whatever you can spare to help fund Martin's education and share his story with whomever you believe will appreciate the opportunity to help this talented youngster. For this, you will have his and my undying gratitude.
