This is Pablo Andres, my 16 year-old son. We are from Guatemala.
Pablo Andres was always a happy child since he was little, and he became a young boy who enjoyed sports, loves soccer and loves being a senior in high school. He likes playing video games, hanging out with his friends and enjoying good food, just as any other teenager.
But in June this year, Pablo Andres' life changed forever.
It started suddenly with unusual stomach pains and a fever. A few days later, as the symptoms were getting worse, my husband and I took him for a checkup. Thus began the worst nightmare of our lives, a terrifying nightmare that has gripped our lives, hearts and souls ever since that fateful June morning.
Pablo Andres was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. We didn’t know exactly what it was, except that it was some type of Leukemia. We also didn’t realize how ill he was. Within four days, he was transferred to the ICU, intubated, developed pneumonia and was put under a medically-induced coma.
Our boy went from being a healthy teenager to fighting for his life, in a matter of days. Just like that. The universe had shifted.
The doctors managed to control the situation and put him on the required medications and for a moment – a sort of ‘chemotherapy in a pill’ – it seemed like he would manage. Yes, he would suffer the illness for the rest of his life, but as long as the medicine worked, he would be ok and slowly he would manage to live a normal life.
There was hope.
But it all changed when in October, Pablo Andres developed an unusual rash and showed an alarmingly high count of white blood cells.
Something was very wrong: The leukemia had mutated and his body became resistant to the medicine.
The doctors said that they would do their best with the resources available to them but there was one problem: the medicine that Pablo Andres needed so badly is not available in Guatemala. Additionally, due to the seriousness of the condition, he would soon need a bone marrow transplant.
This meant that we needed to look for options quickly, do whatever it took to take him out of Guatemala to find the treatment that would save his life.
We have managed to find him a place at the Sickkids hospital in Toronto, Canada, but we didn't have the financial resources to pay for the treatment nor the transplant.
This is why you are reading this story today. We need your help to cover the expenses for the next three months, including:
- Hospitalization
- Chemotherapy
- Doctors fees
- Medication
- Testing of donors for a bone marrow transplant
- Accommodation when we are not in the hospital during treatment and after the bone marrow transplant taskes place.

Este es Pablo Andres, mi hijo de 16 años. Somos de Guatemala.
Pablo Andres fué un niño muy sonriente y alegre desde pequeño. Luego, se convirtió en un joven deportista que ama el fubol, disfruta de su último año de Bachillerato en el colegio, es muy sociable, le gusta jugar video juegos y salir con sus amigos como lo hacen los jovenes de su edad .
Pero en Junio de este año, su vida cambió para siempre.
Todo comenzó derepente con dolores inusuales de estómago y fiebre. Unos días más tarde, mientras los sintómas empeoraban, mi esposo y yo decidimos llevarlo al médico para que lo revisara. Fué entonces que comenzó la peor pesadilla de nuestras vidas, una pesadilla tan terrible que ha envuelto nuestras vidas, corazones y almas desde esa mañana de Junio.
Pablo Andres fue diagnosticado con Leucemia Mieloide Crónica.
En ese momento no sabíamos exactamente de que se trataba, excepto que era un tipo de Leucemia. Tampoco sabíamos lo grave que estaba, cuando de pronto, en solo cuatro días despues de su diagnóstico, fue transferido a la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos en un hospital para niños que sufren de Cancer en Guatemala, fué intubado, tenía neumonía y se tuvieron que inducir un coma.
En cuestión de días, nuestro hijo había pasado de ser un adolescente sano con una vida normal a encontrarse en un hospital peleando por su vida.
Depronto, el universo había girado por completo.
Los médicos lograron controlarlo y lo pusieron en tratamiento - una specie de “quimioterapia en pastillas”, y por un momento parecia que iba a funcionar. El padecería la enfermedad, pero mientras la medicina funcionara, estaría bien y poco a poco podria tener una vida normal.
Nuevamente había esperanza.
Pero todo cambió cuando tan solo cuatro meses después, Pablo Andres desarrolló una alergia inusual y su conteo de células blancas era alarmantemente alto.
Algo estaba mal: La Leucemia había mutado y su cuerpo se había vuelto resistente al medicamento.
Los médicos dijeron que harían lo que estuviera en sus manos, con los recursos disponibles, pero nos advirtieron que Guatemala no contaba con otra medicina distinta para poder tratar a Pablo Andres, y que además, dada la seriedad de su condición , pronto necesitaría un transplante de médula.
Esto significaba que teníamos que buscar una solución rápido, hacer lo todo lo posible para sacarlo de Guatemala en busca del tratamiento para salvar su vida. Teníamos poco tiempo.
Logramos encontrarle un espacio en el hospital Sickkids en Toronto, Canada, sin contar con los recursos para pagar el tratamiento, ni el transplante.
Es por eso que hoy estan leyendo esta historia.
Necesitamos su ayuda para cubrir los gastos de tratamiento durante los próximos tres meses.
Estos gastos incluyen:
- Hospitalización
- Quimioterapia
- Honorarios Médicos
- Medicamento especial
- Pruebas para encontrar donantes que sean compatibles
- Hospedaje cuando no estamos en el hospital en tratamiento y después del transplante
