“UNITED WE STAND” Demarius Pearson The piece I’m creating on N Poplar Street at First Federal Park in Lincolnton will mean a lot to people of different socio-economic backgrounds. I’m trying to reach out to not only the African American community but every minority that lives in Lincolnton. With the Black Lives Matter movement being so big in these last couple months, the tension in Lincolnton is at an all-time high. I believe the community getting together to bring some positivity and good vibes together is just what’s needed. Not only do I want to touch the black community here but also the LGBTQ and Latino community as well. I’m proposing we paint “UNITED WE STAND”. What I hope to accomplish is UNITY. It was suggested that every part of this project have a greater meaning and I intend on doing that. First, for every letter there will be an assigned group of people who have signed up or just came to help off the street. Each group will be diverse (race wise) as possible to flow as many different points of views of what’s happening currently amongst themselves as we can. Second, on the point that the paint color should be a statement as well. For that I believe there should only be 3 different styles that each letter should be in. One being the color of the LGBTQ community. The other, different shades of brown from the lightest going to the darkest being black to represent the black community. The 3rd, a combination of colors representing different Latino heritage. So there will be a total of 13 letters used in the painting. The individual color designs are used for the letters and “WE” will be painted in a combination of all 3 styles to show the unity I’m attempting to push out. I know I haven’t touched on the basis of the white community not being represented on the painting. This project is about support for underrepresented and overlooked people. We hope the white community will support and recognize us! I hope everyone will help by participating in or supporting this project. With everything going on in the world currently, there is still a feeling of “safety” around the white community. That's something the minorities in Lincolnton don’t really feel. If we can put together an event like this with this much tension happening in Lincolnton and have the white community show up and help, it will be a statement of unity, and how everyone will leave a mark. That will be UNITY. With how everything has gone down and from everyone who has supported my thoughts on this idea this is no price to pay. This will start the process to calm the city. I promise it. PS. It was never about flags!
