United We Sit - With Jacquie

Let me tell you about Jacquie Van Wagner, because she and her family need our help.

Jacquie is a sexual assault survivor who was so heart-broken by the potential appointment of Kavanaugh to SCOTUS, and disgusted by the Patriarchy that continues to oppress POC, queer people, and women, that she flew from L.A. to D.C. with the intent of joining a protest. Not finding one, and feeling alone and helpless she sat down on the steps of the Supreme Court with her hands bound and her mouth gagged to express what it felt like for people whose voices are silenced by those in power. This was BOLD, and BRAVE! Shortly after her husband took this picture of her peaceful protest he watched her carried away. She was arrested, spent over 24 hours in custody where she was injured when she fell while in chains, arraigned on criminal charges, ordered to return later this month, and released.

Being this brave is seriously expensive and she and her family need our help. She’s facing a criminal charge for demonstrating at the Supreme Court, and possible penalties of 60 days in jail and $5000 fine, and up to $250 in payments to the Victims Fund. There are also legal fees, medical bills and travel expenses to be covered. 

Jacquie and Mike have been beyond generous to so many people in our community, it’s our turn now to support her, and to help protect the voices of brave people who speak out. As a member of our community she was speaking for many of us who couldn’t.
