United Way Club Washington DC Leadership Trip 2020

Donation protected
The United Way Club Washington DC Leadership Trip for middle school girl students from inner-city Detroit is a cost-free opportunity provided by the United Way Club of Washtenaw International High School. In June 2018, 46 girls traveled to Washington DC for 5 days and visited the Congress, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, White House, and several Smithsonian museums and monuments in Washington DC.

These young students also had the opportunity to meet with leaders such as Congressman John Lewis from the Civil Rights Movement, Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, Congresswomen Brenda Lawrence and Debbie Dingell, and Congressmen Justin Amash, John Moolenaar, and Mark DeSaulnier.

Our goal is to help these middle school girls believe that a woman can accomplish anything with hard work and perseverance. The girls came back with new confidence to pursue their education and career goals. One girl even said, “Now, I now believe that I can do anything, including becoming President of the United States.”

The first trip was a resounding success, and more schools in Michigan are interested in the opportunity. In 2019, we would like to take 90 girls to Washington DC, and our fundraising goal is $45,000. We would greatly appreciate your contribution to this cause. If you have any additional questions, please contact Lisa Mathew ([email redacted]), President of the United Way Club.
