United for Justice: Kathua & Unnao

Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus is raising money for the legal expenses of the victims and their families to ensure they get the justice they deserve. We are partnering with CrowdNewsing, which is raising funds for this cause in India.
The two horrendous rapes that happened in Unnao and Kathua in India have shaken us to the core, and the conscience of the world.
In Unnao, the rape survivor still fights for justice. She was raped by Bhartiya Janta Party leader Kuldeep Sengar and his accomplices on June 4th, 2017. For the last year her family has been trying to get her abusers punished but the perpetrators were being shielded by the state government and the police. The victim's father was arrested, and brutally beaten up by the police while in custody – which led to his demise. The victim and her family tried to immolate themselves in front of the Chief Minister's home to get attention. Even though arrests have finally been made in the case, the family now faces an uphill battle, which requires a huge legal fees.
In the case of the rape-and-murder of the eight-year-old in Kathua while the state government says it will not allow the law to be obstructed, her family has little hope that justice will be delivered in the case. They have even left the village. The fact that lawyers in Jammu tried to prevent the Crime Branch from filing a chargesheet in the case has only raised more concerns. The family now believes the only way they can get justice is if the case is moved out of Jammu. But this won't be easy. The family will need legal support and resources to pursue this case from another city. The Lawyer Deepika Rajawat and her team have been fighting against odds to pursue the case, but even they feel once the attention from the case is gone, things may get difficult.
This is where we come in. If we could raise enough funds for the families and create a legal fund for them, there is a good chance that the families will have the resources they need to continue their quest for justice.
The CrowdNewsing community has helped Indian citizens like Ankit Saxena's family and Afrazul Khan's family raise the funds they needed to try and live a dignified life.

Sadhana exists because we believe a strong progressive Hindu voice is urgently needed to counter the hatred and bigotry of the Hindu nationalist movement that is known as Hindutva. Sadhana's mission is to mobilize both secular and religious Hindus to speak up and act against sexism, homophobia, casteism, racism and Islamophobia in the world and within the Hindu community at large.
