Unite Against Domestic Violence & HIV/ AIDS in South Africa

#ShareYourStory2k17

Mpumi and Mongai are fundraising because South Africa is in trouble. SA is facing an unprecedented amount of murders against young women and girls. Mpumi’s province alone, Gauteng, lost 63 young girls and women, in just 30 days. Johannesburg - Since the start of the year, has a shocking number of women and children that have been killed in South Africa – many of them at the hands of their boyfriends or men they knew. It is the continuation of a national trend. Every eight hours, a woman is killed by an intimate partner, according to the SA Medical Research Council. One in five (21%) of women in a relationship have experienced physical violence by a partner, Stats SA said in its South Africa Demographic and Health Survey 2016 released in May (News24). “We are under siege. We’re watching newspapers as bodies of young women surface, on dumpsites, burnt beyond recognition lay exposed in in society waiting to be added to the list of Another day, another death in South Africa.” – Mpumi Nobiva

We will host a conference this July 29th at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, South Africa. The purpose of this event is to gather South African leaders, young women, and men to engage on critical issues affecting women primarily between the ages of 15 to 24. These issues
include; domestic violence, recent kidnappings, brutal murder and the continued high
prevalence of HIV/AIDS. The goal is to raise awareness, provide support and to empower the
women (and girls) who are directly impacted by these -- and other -- socio-economic issues.

The first segment International Service Project for Education (closed event), includes a 45 minutes empowerment program titled “Self-awareness & Empowerment for Young Women” led by young international female leaders. We will conclude with the distribution of books, school materials and backpacks for the 50 young school girls from surrounding homes and orphanages, sponsored by International BookSmart Foundation based in Greensboro, and the Annual #NoBackPack Day Initiative based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The second segment titled Leadership & Storytelling Conference Gala (open to university students with student cards) will be held in the evening. This portion will include: opening remarks from two HIV-positive young women activists, open discussion of women’s issues (i.e. domestic violence, recent kidnappings and brutal murders of young women and the high prevalence of HIV/Aids that affect young women between the ages of 15 to 24 the most), keynote address and poetry presentation by other young women and men. To declare a pledge / start a fund/commit to the continuation of raising awareness locally & internationally with regards to the empowerment of young women, the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS & the strengthening of orphaned children's voices.
