Keep Union Cab Accessible To All

For over 11 years now, Union Cab’s wheelchair accessible taxis have helped make Madison a more accessible community for all. Although grant funding was available in the past, since 2013 Union Cab has operated the service without any city, state, or federal government subsidy. The demand for wheelchair-accessible transportation has continued to grow, outpacing Union Cab's current ability to meet the needs of the community. Now we are calling on the community to help keep this vitally necessary service available.

Since it was founded in 1979, Union Cab of Madison has followed its mission to provide quality transportation services to all people in the Madison area. In July of 2004, in fulfillment of this mission, and in compliance with spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Union Cab  became the first and remains the only licensed taxicab company in Madison to provide ADA-compliant wheelchair-accessible service. We are the only transportation company in Dane County offering on-demand accessible service 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

While we are happy to offer this service, the reality is that running this program costs us more to operate, while we only charge our passengers the same rate as a standard taxi. Wheelchair accessible vehicles cost approximately two and a half times what one of our traditional taxis cost to purchase, additional equipment must be purchased to ensure passenger safety, and drivers of accessible taxis require additional training and a wage guarantee to ensure staffing levels.

In the past, we have received government subsidies through the Federal New Freedom Program. However, changes in federal grant eligibility have now disqualified us from these grants. At first, our standard taxi operations helped offset the losses from the accessible program. However, new unregulated competition in the transportation market has hindered our ability to manage this previously acceptable loss.

Your donations will help us fund the purchase and preparation of two ATS vehicles, allowing Union Cab to continue to offer this indispensable service to the community of wheelchair users in the Madison area.

“Transportation is vital for people to be able to fully participate in their community. Union Cab has always been proud to be a leader in wheelchair accessible transportation and will continue to be in the years to come.”
-John McNamara, former Business Manager at Union Cab
