<div>En condiciones normales, la bomba intratecal tiene una vida de 7 años, por lo que inicialmente el reemplazo se tenía contemplado para noviembre del 2027. Desafortunadamente esta bomba empezó a fallar el año pasado después de una intervención quirúrgica de emergencia. Tras año y medio tratando de arreglarla, mi calidad de vida ha disminuido considerablemente por el aumento del dolor, y mi única opción es reemplazar todo el equipo.

<div>Esta cirugía tiene un costo aproximado de $350,000 MXN, un precio muy alto que no puedo pagar a. Por diversas razones, yo soy la única responsable de sustentarme económicamente. No cuento con apoyo económico de mi familia ni de un seguro médico: las aseguradoras privadas rechazan mis solicitudes por considerar mi enfermedad como "preexistente", y el seguro del IMSS no cubre este tipo de tratamientos considerados “opcionales”.

<div>A pesar de trabajar tiempo completo y ahorrar activamente para el reemplazo inicial de mi bomba programado para 2027 (dos años antes del fin de su vida útil), no tengo los fondos suficientes para afrontar este gasto anticipado. Además, mi trabajo actual no podría darme baja médica y estaría sin ingresos para sostenerme durante la recuperación.

<div>Sin la bomba, mi calidad de vida sería prácticamente nula, el dolor sería sumamente incapacitante. Perdería la mayor parte de mi movilidad, no podría realizar mis cuidados básicos—como comer y dormir— y me sería imposible continuar trabajando para sustentarme. Necesito esta cirugía para seguir viviendo con la menor cantidad de dolor posible, mantenerme económicamente y retomar mi vida cotidiana.

<div><strong>Mi historia en resumen:</strong>
</div>
<div>A los 12 años me diagnosticaron con escoliosis y varias condiciones vertebrales degenerativas que, desde entonces, me han causado vivir con dolor crónico severo. El dolor fue empeorando con el paso de los años, hasta que a los 16 recibí el diagnóstico de Ehlers-Danlos —una enfermedad hereditaria del tejido conectivo— que explicaba todo el sufrimiento que había estado padeciendo.

<div>Aunque llegar a este diagnóstico no fue nada fácil, me permitió empezar tratamientos paliativos para manejar el dolor, entro muchos otros síntomas. Por el desarrollo de mi enfermedad, pasé varios años postrada en cama, con movilidad mínima por la intensidad del dolor. Me vi obligada a dejar la preparatoria y abandonar mi sueño de estudiar medicina. El dolor no mejoraba con ningún tratamiento analgésico (oral, inyectado, cutáneo), y llegó al punto de agotar todas las opciones disponibles. Eso convirtió en candidata para un tratamiento invasivo pero muy efectivo: la implantación de una bomba intratecal de morfina para disminuir el dolor con la menor cantidad de efectos adversos posibles.

<div>En marzo del 2021 me realizaron el procedimiento de implantación de la bomba y, afortunadamente, empecé a responder favorablemente. Mi vida cambió completamente: pasé de vivir en cama incapacitada por el dolor, a poder gozar una calidad de vida relativamente normal. Recuperé mi movilidad con ayuda de muletas, volví a ser capaz de realizar mis cuidados básicos, seguir estudiando, e incluso empezar a trabajar.

<div><strong>Situación actual:</strong>
</div>
<div>Mi estado de salud estuvo estable durante un par de años después de la implantación de la bomba intratecal. Sin embargo, a principios de 2024 sufrí una lesión medular como consecuencia del síndrome de médula anclada oculta (una comorbilidad del Ehlers-Danlos), que me causó paraplejia en ambas piernas.

<div>Estuve varios días hospitalizada, me realizaron múltiples estudios y finalmente fue necesario una intervención de desanclaje medular para poder recuperar la función de mis piernas. Lamentablemente, tuve complicaciones quirúrgicas que causaron daño medular permanente, lo que resultó en un dolor mucho más intenso del que tenía antes. A pesar de haber recuperado cierta función de mis piernas tras la cirugía, las secuelas limitaron aún más mi movilidad y ahora tengo que usar una silla de ruedas para desenvolverme en mi vida diaria.

<div>Otra consecuencia de esa cirugía fue que mi bomba intratecal dejó de funcionar correctamente. Comenzó a dispensar menos medicamento del indicado por su computadora interna, lo que hizo que el dolor se volviera a ser insoportable. Para compensar esta discrepancia, tuvieron que aumentar la dosis un 60% para volver a controlar mi dolor. Durante meses seguimos los procedimientos recomendados para asegurar que la computadora volviera a dispensar la cantidad correcta, pero no tuvimos éxito. Con el tiempo, la bomba ha continuado administrando cada vez menos medicamento, lo que significa que experimento aún más dolor y la necesidad de aumentar continuamente la dosis para compensar.

<div>En mayo de 2025 se realizó una prueba de catéter para confirmar que éste no estuviera comprometido y que fuera esa la razón de la falla en la bomba. Los resultados mostraron que el catéter no estaba tapado y que sí estaba pasando medicamento. También se realizaron pruebas técnicas en la bomba para verificar el correcto funcionamiento del rotor, comprobando que eso tampoco era el problema. Se decidió entonces esperar 6 meses para ver si su función volvía a la normalidad.

<div>Tristemente, en noviembre de 2025, me confirmaron que el problema de mi bomba no tiene solución y es necesario reemplazar el equipo completo.

<div><strong>¿Por qué la urgencia?</strong>
</div>
<div>El reemplazo es urgente ya que, si fuera a esperar más tiempo con la bomba sin funcionar correctamente, me arriesgo a que eventualmente deje de dispensar morfina por completo. Esto me causaría un dolor insoportable y paralizante, además de ponerme en riesgo de desarrollar síndrome de abstinencia. Si llegara a este punto, mis únicas opciones serían un reemplazo urgente del equipo—que sería aún más costoso—o volver a tratarme con los analgésicos orales o intravenosos que tomaba antes, que eran inefectivos para controlar mi dolor y con un costo mensual todavía más elevado.

<div>Cualquiera de estas alternativas pondría en riesgo mi supervivencia económica, ya que sería incapaz de trabajar para pagar mi renta, comida y gastos médicos. Por estas razones, mi equipo médico considera vital para mi integridad física realizar la cirugía a la brevedad.

Under normal circumstances, an intrathecal pump lasts 7 years, so a replacement was initially planned for November 2027.

<div>Unfortunately, my pump started to fail last year after an emergency spinal surgery, and it is not delivering the amount of medication it should to manage my pain. After more than a year and a half of trying to fix it, unsuccessfully, my quality of life has substantially decreased due to the increased pain. The only solution is to replace the entire system in order to manage my pain again and regain my quality of life.

<div>This surgery costs approximately $20,000 USD, an amount I cannot afford on my own. For many reasons, I am the only one solely responsible for all my expenses, daily and medical. I have no financial support from my family and no health insurance—private companies in Mexico deny me due to having "preexisting conditions," and public healthcare does not cover this type of treatment, as it’s considered expensive and “optional”.

<div>Despite working full-time and actively saving for the initial pump replacement in 2027 (two years before its end of life), I do not have nearly enough funds to cover this unexpected early replacement.

<div>Without the pump, my quality of life would be nonexistent. The pain I've lived with since childhood is profoundly disabling. I would lose most of my mobility, be unable to perform basic self-care like eating and sleeping, and could no longer work to support myself. I need this surgery to continue managing my pain, maintain my financial independence, and essentially, retain control over my life.

<div><strong>About me</strong>
</div>
<div>I was diagnosed with scoliosis and several degenerative spinal conditions at age 12, which have caused me significant pain ever since. The pain worsened over the years until in 2017, at 16 years old, I was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome—an inherited connective tissue disorder—which finally explained the pain I had been living with.
</div>
<div>Getting a diagnosis wasn't easy. I spent years bedridden with minimal mobility due to the intense pain. At just 16 years old I was forced to leave high school and abandon my dream of studying medicine because my pain was not responding to any treatment (oral, injected, or topical). We eventually exhausted all available options, making me a candidate for the invasive but effective treatment of having an intrathecal morphine pump implanted to manage my pain.

<div>In March 2021, I underwent the implantation procedure, and fortunately, I started responding really well fairly quickly. The intrathecal pump changed my life, I went from being confined to my bed to regaining my mobility, resume basic self-care, resume my schooling, and even begin working to support myself.

<div><strong>Current state</strong>
</div>
<div>With the help of the pain pump, my health was stable for a couple of years. Sadly, in early 2024, I suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome (a comorbidity of Ehlers-Danlos), which caused paraplegia in both of my legs. I was hospitalized for several days, underwent multiple tests, and finally underwent a spinal cord untethering surgery. Unfortunately, I suffered surgical complications that caused permanent spinal cord damage, resulting in significantly more pain and . Although I regained some functionality in my legs after surgery, the sequelae further limited my mobility, and I ended up having to depend on a wheelchair for daily life.

<div>Another consequence of that surgery was that my intrathecal morphine pump stopped functioning correctly. It began dispensing less medication than its internal computer indicated, causing my pain to become unbearable again. To compensate, my dosage was increased by 60%. For months, we tried every recommended procedure to get the pump to dispense the correct amount, but we were unsuccessful. Over time, the pump has been delivering less and less medication, meaning more pain and ever-increasing dosage adjustments.

<div>In May 2025, I had a catheter test to confirm it wasn't blocked or compromised. Technical tests were also performed on the pump to verify the rotor was functioning. The test showed the catheter was clear and passing medication. The decision was made to wait six months to see if its function would return to normal.

<div>Sadly, in November 2025, they confirmed that my pump has been irreparably damaged and that the entire system would need to be replaced.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Why is this urgent?</strong>
</div>
<div>This replacement is urgent because if I were to wait longer with a the pump malfunctioning, there's a higher risk iof t stopping completely. This would cause unbearable pain and even put me at risk of withdrawal syndrome. If that happens, my only options would be an emergency replacement—which would be even more expensive—or returning to the oral or intravenous painkillers I used before, which were ineffective and had a higher monthly cost.

<div>Either alternative would jeopardize my financial survival, as the pain would prevent me from working to pay for rent, food, and medical expenses. For these reasons, my medical team considers the surgery vital for my physical integrity to be performed as soon as possible.
