Uni Of Nottingham Powerlifting World Championships

Doação protegida
The University of Nottingham's Powerlifting team have managed to qualify for the 2019 University World Championships in Tartu, Estonia and we need your help! We're looking to raise some money to subsidise the costs of travel, accommodation, and living expenses for our team for the week that we are competing. Any form of support is welcome, be it a donation of any size, or even just getting the word out! Thank you for your support

OUR STORY

Powerlifting is a strength sport involving attempts to lift the maximum amount of weight in three specific disciplines: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Athletes compete against other competitors, within a similar weight class to them, to try and put together the highest total they can achieve. Although seemingly an individual sport, an athlete's position within their weight category corresponds to points that are then aggregated to form a team score which determines the best team within the competition.

To qualify for the Powerlifting World Championships, Universities from all across Great Britain send out a team of athletes to compete at the British University Championships where they battle it out to claim the top spot. The top 8 scoring athletes per University have their scores aggregated towards a team score, and the 5 best Universities are given the opportunity to represent Great Britain and their institution in an international competition.

This year saw over 40 Universities across Great Britain competing for the coveted top 5 spot. The University of Nottingham's men's team secured a 4th place finish overall, whilst the women's team destroyed the opposition and came away with 3rd place overall. This meant that we are able to send 16 members of our club to compete in Estonia and represent their University in the international stage!

As is to be expected, sending out a team of 16 athletes to compete internationally during a week-long event is no inexpensive operation. Our priorities are with the lifters. We hope, that by raising any amount of money, we may be able to subsidise the costs of living that they'll be facing whilst in Estonia for the week. These costs include things such as flights to and from Tartu, accommodation, competition entry and anti-doping fees, as well as food and any other additional expenses.

University of Nottingham's powerlifting team haven't been strangers to international competition. Last year, the men's team managed to just barely qualify, coming in 5th at the British Championships. Unfortunately, they were not able to get enough funding to allow all 8 team members to fly out together and support each other during the event. This led to a lot of them competing alone, with no one around to manage and coach them during their individual events. This obviously lowered the expectations of the team's ability to place, however, through their abilities and talents alone, still managed to come away with 3rd place against some veteran teams!

We hope that being able to send out our full team together will provide us with the opportunity to not only encourage and assist our fellow team members, but also allow us to devise and implement strategies that we weren't previously able to do. These small benefits that we might gain through your support will inevitably help us with our goals of a podium finish for both our men's and women's team!

Support of any kind will be appreciated, be it a small or large donation, or even just getting the word out to people who may be interested in supporting us. Every single member of our team deserves the opportunity to represent their country and University in a sport we all feel so passionately about. Hours of hard work and sacrifice goes into excelling and achieving what we have achieved. We hope to demonstrate our hard work and sacrifice in the most prestigious competition of the year.

Thank you so much for your support!
