David & Goliath: A Love Story

Donation protected
Thirty-one centuries ago, two warriors entered the Valley of Elah. One warrior exited alive. Quite unexpectedly, it was the one with less armor, fewer weapons, and an unmistakable height disadvantage. Ever since then, David and Goliath has served as a template upon which a wide array of conflicts has been projected: stories of disadvantage, survival, justice and negative probability. What is it about this short and simple plot that makes it so flexible, universal, and endlessly applicable to our human experience?

David and Goliath: A Love Story is an examination of the many ways we use the ancient narrative as a mirror for our modern battles, as well as an exploration of similar stories from non-Christian cultures. Along the way, you’ll meet self-styled Davids from across the globe, including American social media stars, community activists in Australia, Central European freedom fighters, a small-town Irish Gaelic football team, a Senegalese soccer squad, an upstart cellphone company in India and Southeast Asian politicians. Despite any and all differences of region, race or gender, they are all part of a common collective: the international order of underdogs.

This is a “crowdfunded” creative project, formerly code-named as "Project Darkhorse", with levels of rewards available if you Go and Fund. Here is the budget breakdown for all funding plateaus, in ascending order: the hiring of an editor ($1,000); the hiring of a designer for layout and book cover ($2,000); costs related to a softcover print run ($3,000); production and promotional costs and postage ($4,000); three research trips at $1,000 each ($5,000, $6,000, $7,000); costs related to a hardcover print run ($8,000); costs related to audiobook production ($9,000). If the project funding reaches $9,500, all $30 preorders are automatically upgraded to hardcover.

Book preorders will be delivered upon project completion and publication in late 2Q 2019. Premium donors ($100 or higher) receive access to the project’s Slack workspace , where in-progress book text is posted for feedback and review.
