Una gamba bionica per Antonio

English version below

ENGLISH

Hi, my name is Antonio and my story begins in 2014 when, at 14 years old and after several vicissitudes and wrong diagnoses, I embark on a journey to Bologna. Following a consultation at the Rizzoli Hospital I am subjected to a bone biopsy and the verdict is clear: there is a tumour in my leg, precisely Ewing’s sarcoma to the proximal right tibia.
Treatment consists in 4 chemotherapy cycles before surgery and another 4 after surgery, with a final cycle on high doses in a sterile room.

After the first 4 cycles, I go through a surgery where the bone affected by the tumour is removed and a new one, from a donor, is implanted and fixed on my leg with internal plates and screws, so that, over time, it would melt with the remaining part of my tibia.

My leg is put into a cast and after about 30 days I return to Rizzoli to remove the stitches and complete a post-surgery check-up. Already on this occasion, the doctors notice a level of pain that signals a probable infection. I complete a cycle of antibiotics waiting on further developments and I continue with chemotherapy.

Three months go by and the wound does not heal properly. I go through two post-surgery clean-ups within the span of 2 months in order to try and save the implant. The problem, unfortunately, persists and the orthopaedics decide on removing the bone implant that had been put into place with plates and screws and to put instead an antibiotic cement spacer, trying to heal the joint from the infection and to preserve the space while waiting for a reconstruction with a new internal prothesis. In the meantime, I start an intravenous antibiotic treatment that I do every day. The spacer can remain in the same place for around 40 days, after which there is a surgery during which some cultural tests are carried out and, depending on their result, a decision is taken on whether to implant a new spacer or move on with the prothesis.

The 40 days go by, I go through another surgery and the test is still positive for Staphylococcus aureus; the spacer is thus replaced with another one and I have to come back for the same procedure after 40 days.

Throughout all of these months, not having a prothesis, the joint remains rigid and I cannot bend my knee at all. I also have to walk with crutches given that no weight can be put on the leg.

I come back to Rizzoli, I go through one more surgery: the test comes back negative and a prothesis is installed (2016). I go back home and start rehabilitation.

After all those months having to be at rest, the knee has become rigid and, despite all the efforts that were put into physiotherapy, I could not, along with the physiotherapist, recuperate on its flexibility. I continue and finally bring to completion the last cycles of chemotherapy. The treatment seems to have been effective and all the check-ups I’ve had since then, in the past 7 years, have gone well.

Despite this problem with the flexibility of the joint that forces me to walk with a rigid leg and be uncomfortable in movements such as sitting, a period of relative tranquillity beings for me. It lasts around 4 years.

At the beginning of 2020 I start feeling slightly uncomfortable in my ankle, as the rod of the prothesis in my tibia has moved. I go for a check-up and a surgery is planned in October 2020 to solve this problem. In the meantime, during the same surgery, the calcification on my knee is removed. Everything seems to go well: I go through Kinetic rehabilitation to recuperate the flexibility in the leg and I manage to flex my knee up to 75/80 degrees. However, after this surgery, too, the wound seems to have some trouble. A fistula forms, out of which a serum-like liquid is secreted which is linkable to an active infection. I am forced to start taking medication every day and, following the doctor’s advice, I initiate antibiotic treatments which seem to be inefficient.

I go back to Rizzoli to speak with the surgeon who operated on me and he explains to me that, at this point, amputation is the only solution to solve the problem of the infection forever and put an end to this story. At the beginning, I am perplexed. However, after a while thinking about all the suffering I went through these years and the 7 surgeries that brought me nowhere, I decide that this is the only way to solve the problem. 10th June 2021: my right leg is amputated a few centimetres above the knee.

Despite everything, I never lost my smile and I always kept moving forward, dealing, with force and determination, with the process that brought me to live again. Now more than ever I am motivated to take my life back into my own hands and recuperate all the time I wasted in the hospital – but I need your help!

Fortunately, prosthetic technology nowadays allows us to reach excellent and innovative results that allow us to go back to a normal life. However, sadly, these technologies come at a very high cost that cannot be covered by Local Health Authorities (ASL). This is why I started this GoFundMe. The prosthetic in question is Genium X3 by Ottobock, a real bionic leg that functions exactly as a leg would. This prosthetic allows you to walk, go up and down the stairs normally, bathe in the sea and in the pool, as well as run! All of the things that a young guy should be able to do at this age. For whoever would like to contribute, even with a small donation, unity is strength! Help me make my dream come true!
