A dream called Sibillini Wool

And in the end the sheep all lived happily ever after in their new shelter, loved and pampered by Giulia, Alessandro, Matteo and Anna.

Oh no…, this would be the end of the story, of our dream, but only if you all help us to make it come true.

Let’s take one step at a time because like in all stories there is “ they lived happily ever after”, so there is “ once upon a time” as well, and that is exactly where our story begins.

Once upon a time there was a young man named Alessandro who, together with his beloved Giulia, lived in Fermo, Italy in the Marche region: one of the most beautiful and superbly conserved medieval villages.

And so it is well known, however, that city life is not for everyone, above all, it was not for those who loved animals and who desired to provide them with suitable space for them.

In the mountains it seemed to them would be the best place where they could provide sufficient space for the animals and all those people who would have liked to meet with them in their unusual daily reality of this job, born thanks to their first great love, Asaki – a Akita inu dog who brought the first major revolution which was to transform the undercoat of the dog fur into balls of extra soft dog-wool.

From a personal desire a small business was born: called Dog Wool (www.lanadicane.it) and today it provides to our clientele something original, unique, that totally respects the animals, and above all, the possibility of having a tangible keep sake of their beloved companions in this life.

As in the best fairy tales, the choice of moving to Rocca di Montefortino comes on a special day, the day that Matteo was supposed to be born and who immediately showed his calm character by coming into this life with some delay the following week.

Mother and baby reach the Rocca almost by accident and immediately stepping out of the car, just knew that they were in the right place: too much at first, it seemed a small ruins with a large adjacent field that just felt like the best possible place where dreams and children could grow together.

What the Rocca represents today is the fruit of work, patience, perserverance: with the help of sacrifices as well as the happiness of Giulia, Alessandro, Matteo and Anna that are demonstrated by waking up every morning in this magnificent place making it all worthwhile.

All this work has left an important mark on the territory, like the earthquake in 2016, and the Rocca which managed to hold up without damages at the same time inspired a new desire: that of giving a new value to this natural fiber, wool and at the same time recall the hundred year old traditions and culture.

And so 10 certified Sopravissana sheep were bought and a domestic herd was formed: today they live in a temporary shelter next to the house, are taken to graze in a nearby pasture every day and when they remain at the Rocca they keep the grounds well cared for.

The choice of this race was not chosen by chance: these sheep are native to the area, are almost extinct and have a very high quality wool. The objective is that of creating a valuable short supply chain for the sheep breeder/farmers in central Italy, that today are obliged to getting rid of the wool as waste or undersell it’s value to the industrial market.

In their project for the future, after the new stable in wood will be finished to become the principle shelter for the animals, there will be a laboratory and a museum and in addition for a tourist hiking route throughout which it will be possible to take a short trip in time. Besides being able to admire the sheep, it will be possible to admire the gardens for plants that provide the tincture for coloring the wool, a small wool museum regarding the wool itself in order to create in a couple of hours a path showing how the transformation of wool has changed in the last 100 years. The entire project can be found in the Fattoria La Rocca (La Rocca Farm) at www.fattorialarocca.it.

Here is where there are leaks in our project – dream: as of today the stable shelter for the sheep has reached the foundation stage and without economic help from those of you who have fallen in love with the wool, the countryside, the antique traditions and wanting to increase the value of the territory so terribly damaged from the earthquake, it is impossible to imagine considering how to finish all the projects that have been made with all the relative administrative approvals for the remaining parts to be realized. The entire structure of the wood stable shelter will be totally eco-sustainable and provided with solar energy, and this is because Alessandro and Giulia want the wool they produce to be ethical and ecological.

Every €uro collected will be destined to the realization of a transparent short textile supply chain. Each of you can choose how to help us out, you will not only be helping us on an economic level but in a tangible manner so that the values of the Fattoria La Rocca can preserve the past, give added value to the territory, respect the surrounding ecosystem including that of the animals.

Each donation will be of help and you in turn will receive a small souvenir.
