Un ospedale in foresta nel cuore del Madagascar

Ciao, siamo Linda e Rita, insieme ad altri volontari, formiamo una piccola associazione non-profit chiamata TsiryParma, presieduta da Guido Malvisi, che opera nella lontana Isola Rossa.
Il Madagascar è tra i dieci paesi più poveri dell’Africa. Questa realtà la si può toccare con mano ogni giorno: non è raro imbattersi in gruppi di bambini affamati e abbandonati a loro stessi, conoscere persone con problemi di salute molto comuni ma irrisolti per mancanza di cure ospedaliere.
In malgascio tsiry significa germoglio, ed è proprio questo lo scopo di TsiryParma: far germogliare di nuovo la foresta tropicale partendo dal miglioramento delle condizioni di vita dei suoi abitanti.
La missione di TsiryParma
Dal 2012 TsiryParma agisce direttamente sul campo, grazie alla presenza di Nicola Gandolfi, il fondatore, che ogni giorno lavora con la popolazione locale per promuovere una gestione forestale più sostenibile.
I progetti integrano la costruzione di infrastrutture come piccole scuole, pozzi, fontane, dighette per l’irrigazione, con la sensibilizzazione ambientale e l’insegnamento di nuovi metodi colturali per incentivare l’uso consapevole del territorio e l’abbandono della pratica del tavy, il taglia-brucia della vegetazione forestale, praticato illegalmente per creare nuovi campi da coltivare.
Vohidahy e il vecchio ospedale
L’associazione opera principalmente a Vohidahy, uno dei comuni più isolati nella zona del centro-est del Madagascar. E’ situato a circa 40 chilometri dalla cittadina di Ambositra, in una meravigliosa valle sperduta in mezzo alle montagne e circondata da quel poco che resta della foresta tropicale, che purtroppo si assottiglia di anno in anno.
I circa 11.000 abitanti, sparsi in 12 villaggi, possono usufruire di un piccolo vecchio ospedale che si trova al centro della valle.
Da anni il comune di Vohidahy e il medico della zona chiedono aiuto per la ristrutturazione dell’ospedale, in quanto questo mostra evidenti segni di decadenza e le attrezzature sono ormai logore dopo 30 anni di utilizzo.
A causa degli spazi ristretti, nella sala degenza sono presenti solamente tre letti, che vengono utilizzati principalmente per la maternità.
Prima che TsiryParma portasse l’acqua corrente (adesso c’è un lavandino con il rubinetto) si utilizzava l’acqua del fiume stoccata in secchi.
Frequenti sono i casi di malattie gastrointestinali (diarrea, febbre tifoide, trasmesse dalla contaminazione di cibo ed acqua) che colpiscono soprattutto i bambini. Durante il periodo delle piogge sono numerosi i casi di malaria, che spesso vengono curati con erbe locali, per l’impossibilità di reperire cure adeguate.
Diversi sono i ricoveri a causa di incidenti sul lavoro per fratture, tagli e ustioni, ma, nella maggior parte dei casi, la struttura non è adeguata ad ospitare tali urgenze, che devono essere trasportate a spalla con una barella fino all’ospedale di Ambositra, a 40 km di distanza.
L’obiettivo della raccolta fondi
A inizio 2020 TsiryParma ha avviato la progettazione per la costruzione di un nuovo ospedale, in quanto ristrutturare quello vecchio sarebbe stato più una spesa che un’azione efficace.
Ad ottobre ci è stato confermato il finanziamento del progetto da parte dell’otto per mille della Chiesa Valdese, ma questo coprirà solo il 70% delle spese. Nel budget restano scoperti 13.600€.
L’obiettivo di questa raccolta fondi è di raccogliere 10.000€ per portare a compimento la costruzione dell’ospedale, coprendo le spese dei pasti dei lavoratori locali, le spese di spostamento dei nostri tecnici malgasci, che seguiranno il progetto, e il trasporto dei materiali da costruzione.
I lavori inizieranno ad aprile 2021 e dureranno circa un anno.
Nella costruzione utilizzeremo materiali locali e coinvolgeremo la comunità di Vohidahy per la manodopera, favorendo così l’economia locale.

Madagascar is among the ten poorest countries in Africa. This reality can be touched every day: it is frequent to come across groups of hungry and abandoned children, to meet people with very common, but unresolved, health problems due to the lack of hospital cares.
In Malagasy tsiry means sprout, and this is precisely the purpose of TsiryParma: to make the tropical forest sprout again improving the living conditions of its inhabitants.
TsiryParma mission
Since 2012 TsiryParma has directly been operating in Madagascar, thanks to the presence of Nicola Gandolfi, the founder, who works every day with the local population to promote a more sustainable forest management.
Our projects integrate the building of infrastructures such as small schools, wells, fountains, irrigation dikes, with environmental awareness and the teaching of new cultivation methods to encourage the conscious use of the land and the abandonment of the practice of tavy, the cutting-burning of forest vegetation, practiced illegally to create new fields.
Vohidahy and its old hospital
The association operates mainly in Vohidahy, one of the most isolated municipalities in the central-eastern area of Madagascar. It is located at about 40 kilometers from the town of Ambositra, in a wonderful remote valley in the middle of the mountains and surrounded by what remains of the tropical forest, which, unfortunately, thins out from year to year.
A small old hospital located in the center of the valley is used by approximately 11,000 inhabitants, spread over 12 villages.
Since years, the municipality of Vohidahy and the doctor have been asking for help with the renovation of the hospital, as it shows evident signs of decay and the equipment is now worn out after 30 years of use.
Due to the tight spaces, there are only three beds in the hospital room, which are mainly used for maternity. Before TsiryParma brought running water (now there is a sink with a tap), the river water, stored in buckets, was used.
There are frequent cases of gastrointestinal diseases (diarrhea, typhoid fever, transmitted by contamination of food and water) which mainly affect children. During the raining season there are numerous cases of malaria, which are often treated with local herbs, due to the inability to find adequate treatments.
Several hospitalizations are due to accidents at work for fractures, cuts and burns, but in most cases the structure is not adequate to treat such emergencies. The wounded must be carried by a stretcher on someone else’s shoulders to the Ambositra hospital 40 km far away.
Objective of the crowdfunding
At the beginning of 2020 TsiryParma started planning the construction of a new hospital, as renovating the old one would have been more an expense than an effective action.
In October, the financing of the project by the Waldensian Church was confirmed to us, but this will only cover 70% of the costs. € 13,600 remain uncovered.
The goal of this fundraiser is to collect € 10,000 to complete the construction of the hospital, covering the costs of meals for local workers, the travel costs of our Malagasy technicians, who will follow the project, and the transport of materials.
The construction is starting in April 2021 and will last for about one year.
In the construction we will use local materials and involve the Vohidahy community for the manpower, favoring the local economy.
