UN HC - Michelle Bachelet: Listen to Us!

We ask you today to support us in this important endeavour and to provide any support you can, especially financially. We will be mobilising thousands of Uyghurs and others from different European countries, renting several coach buses, provide for gas, food and drinks. We urgently need you to make this historic demonstration happen.

Since 2016, the Chinese government has committed genocidal actions against the Uyghurs, Kazakhs and others living within East Turkistan, including the largest forced internment of an ethnic group since World War II, forced abortions, mass sterilization, and other horrific atrocity crimes. In December 2021, a London-based independent Tribunal confirmed that genocide, crimes against humanity and torture were being committed by the Chinese government against the Uyghurs and other people in East Turkistan.

Uyghurs across the world have struggled to have their voices heard, to connect with those who have the power to condemn China for their gross human rights abuses. Last September, we finally heard the news that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights would complete an independent study of the situation. Recently, Michelle Bachelet, the High Commissioner, announced that she and her office would visit East Turkistan to investigate the situation directly.

While this may sound good on paper, it is anything but. Prior to this announcement, the Office has deliberately withheld the report, despite the requests from nearly 200 human rights groups. In early 2022, the Chinese government made it clear they would only allow Bachelet and her staff to visit if it was not for an investigation, but for “promoting exchange and cooperation .” The High Commissioner’s office has continued to provide little information about their visit to East Turkistan, and experts believe that the High Commissioner will not see the well-documented abuses but instead be subject to propaganda and limited access to the camps and its unwilling inhabitants. The High Commissioner has not yet met with any camp survivor, much less any Uyghur leader in the diaspora.

On May 13, from 9:00 to 13:00, the World Uyghur Congress and other EU-based Uyghur organizations along with Tibetan, Hong Kong and other international NGOs will come together for a large demonstration in Geneva, where we will call for High Commissioner Bachelet to listen to our collective voice, and ask her to listen to our requests, which includes the immediate release of the report, meeting with camp survivors and Uyghur leaders as well as to have unfettered access.

Today, we ask for your support to help raise these voices. Donations will go towards renting coach buses to transport Uyghurs and supporters from different European countries to Geneva for the protest, as well as refreshments to maintain energy. Any help you can give will help in the efforts to save the Uyghur people.
