Programs for Slangspruit Children

We need your help! In May, we are going to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa for 3 months, to volunteer at Slangspruit township Elementary school, with a community outreach organization called Ukulapha. Ukulapha, which means “healing” in Zulu, strives to empower children and youth and improve learning conditions at school.

Life is full of hardships for the children of Slangspruit. Things we take for granted, like water, food and shelter are extremely limited. Often their only meal of the day is the one provided by the school. HIV rates are high and many parents have died, leaving their children to raise younger siblings. These are problems no child should have to face.

For the last month of our placement, when school is on break, we will be implementing daily camps to provide the children with a safe and fun place to go. The money raised will go towards nutritional snacks, art and craft supplies, and other recreational activities for the children. The goal is to raise enough money to take the children on field trips, such as hiking in nearby parks, so they can have new experiences that differ from the harsh realities they face daily.

All contributions are greatly appreciated as every dollar counts. Funds go directly to supporting the children of Slangspruit Elementary. The more we raise, the more opportunities these children will have.
