Why welcome baskets?
Refugees from Ukraine are beginning to arrive to host families in the Westshore community. Ukrainian refugees, most of whom are women and children, had to leave their home country quickly due to very real dangers of a horrific and unprovoked war. Often, arriving families bring very little with them. One woman in her 80s arrived only with the clothes on her back. As the refugees are settling in our community, we want to help them feel welcome and provide some basic necessities in the form of welcome baskets.

What goes in the basket?
The contents of each basket varies slightly based on the needs of the refugee family. Generally, the focus is on hygiene items, first aid, and some information for additional local resources. For families with children we provide some art supplies and a toy. It may not seem like much, but it makes a huge difference to someone who arrived with nothing.

We've already delivered more than 10 such baskets in the Westshore, purely using the resources of our volunteers. However, as more families arrive and their needs evolve we need your help to fill the baskets. We estimate that on average there will be one refugee arriving every day in the area.

Who we are?
We are a group of volunteers with Help Ukraine Vancouver Island, a grassroots initiative to assist with bringing, welcoming, and supporting Ukrainian refugees on Vancouver Island. Specifically our group of volunteers is responsible for the Westshore communities of Colwood, Langoford, Metchosin, Highlands, and Sooke. Donated funds will be spent on purchasing items for the welcome baskets. We work with local businesses to secure in-kind donations and provide discounts on bulk purchases. You can be sure that your donation goes to helping a family in need, right here on the Westshore.

How far your contribution goes?
  • $10 = one laundry basket to hold the items
  • $20 = hygiene kit (soap, shampoo, oral care) for family or toy for child
  • $50 = gift card to local general storage for family
  • $100 = entire basket's contents for a family

Your support is appreciated by the Ukrainian refugee families themselves, local Ukrainian community, and all of the volunteers who are helping Ukrainians during this very difficult time.
