A Note From The Writer/Director...

'Hey all! So here it is – my play ‘Growing Pains’, going on tour around Hertfordshire, London and the Edinburgh Fringe this year. At last I have completed a piece of work I am really happy with, found an absolutely kickass producer and an insanely talented actor to take my work on, and we are headed on tour with it this year. Our aim is to spread it around, show it to lots of awesome people, entertain to the max and most importantly spread awareness about mental health. For those that know me well, you will know I have suffered with depression and anxiety for a number of years and it has been the support of everyone around me including systems put in place and a network of fabulous friends and family that have seen me through. Without them I don’t know where I’d be. And as a mentor and leader to many children in the area I have grown up in, it is so so important to me that my students get the support they need – particularly if they are considering a career in the arts. ‘Growing Pains’ is based on my childhood – it is (hopefully) heart warming, relatable, warm, thought provoking and entertaining – and thanks to Steph’s amazing performance you will get a good number of laughs. If you support this project I promise we will deliver you a fantastic show. I have been working hard towards this for several years and now, at last I can showcase my work, with some amazing individuals around me. I have never asked for funding towards a show before, because I wanted to wait until I made sure that I had the right show, team and standard of work to put on something good. So I am now asking that you support us – we will be insanely grateful for anything you can give us. All shows need crucial funding – for anything and everything – from ensuring we pay our team properly, to travel costs, insurance, venues, props, accommodation and festival fees, and so much more! A life without the arts is not a life worth living, so please keep creativity alive, support the message of positive mental health and support us. We want to make this tour as successful and amazing as it can be! NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL. Thank you so much! xxx' -  Kim (Writer/Director)

What is the Project?

Growing Pains is a one-woman, coming-of-age comical drama written by Kim Southey, developed as a response to the rapid increase in childhood mental illness in the UK. Focusing on the difficulties of growing up, the prevalence of childhood mental health issues and the pain of adolescent suicide, the show discusses the harsh reality of these issues, and how important it is to encourage open discussion surrounding mental health problems. We want young people to know that they are not alone.

The production will be accompanied by youth workshops and outreach projects in areas of low-engagement, and we have teamed up with Young Minds to focus on opening up the discussion around childhood mental health in a friendly, creative environment.

Our ultimate goal is to promote positive mental health in young people through a London and Hertfordshire tour of the work. We believe it is essential to raise awareness about self-harm and suicide prevention in young people, and in order to promote this, we would like for the show to be considered by more established new writing theatres in London and the surrounding areas. Our long-term aim is for the play to be published and distributed as a useful resource for study at schools, youth clubs and outreach programmes, to encourage widespread awareness, discussion and support.

What we have to pay for...

- Edinburgh Fringe Registration and marketing/promotion fees
- Venue Deposits (Herts, London and Ed Fringe)
- Travel (to London, Herts, Edinburgh)
- Accommodation at the Fringe
- Insurance
- Artists' pay (Equity minimum if possible)
- Set/Props/Costume
- Technical aspects ie technicians to run the show, electrical items such as mics

So in all we are looking at a budget of around £10,000. It's our job to raise the rest, but if we can raise around £3,000 from this particular campaign that would help us ENORMOUSLY!
