Maternity Homeless Shelter (Mother Teresa)

Donation protected
Missionaries of Charity were founded in Calcutta in 1948 by Mother Terese as a catholic religious order consisting of over 6000 individuals serving the poorest of the poor as active and contemplative sisters, brothers and priests. They serve internationally in over 130 countries.

The members of the order, the MCs, live radical vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor

Missionaries of Charity care for those who include refugees, former prostitutes, the mentally ill, sick children, abandoned children, lepers, people with AIDS, the dying, the aged, and convalescent. In some countries they have schools to teach abandoned street children as well as other services according to the community needs. Each community each region has unique needs. These services are provided, without charge, to all people regardless of their religion or social status.

Mother Terese started the mission in Chicago with a soup kitchen and shelter at 115 N Oakley in the early 1980s. The soup kitchen is still at that location serving homeless men and women everyday but Thursday. The sisters share their convents whenever possible as a shelters or maternity homes. In Chicago the maternity shelter for homeless women as well as a limited number of long term homeless elderly has been in place since that time as well.

A number of volunteers and contributors work alongside the sisters in these various apostolates. The order does not accept any funds from governments. The work of the Missionaries of Charity is funded by private donations.

We continue to offer our prayers of gratitude for the support and generosity of the University of Illinios Medical Systems Hospital. Our experience is not limited to the donations but the quality of medical care, the understanding extended to our mentally ill residents and the robust maternity services to our mothers and newborns. May God continue to bless and protect you and your families and know that we pray for you.
