You may still remember Augustas Dennie, a gay man from St. Vincent and the Grenadines whose refugee claim was denied, and that he was deported on April 30, 2013. This was despite the fact that he had faced a severe homophobic attack in St. Vincent, which resulted in his receiving permanent brain injuries. During his stay in Canada, Dennie had established himself as an activist in the LGBT community: his supporters included Olivia Chow, who wrote a letter on his behalf to the then Immigration Minister Jason Kenny. Over seven hundred people signed an online petition saying that his life would be further threatened if he were sent back. Of course they were right.
Since Dennie was deported and 'outed' by the media in Canada, St. Vincent and in the neighbouring Caribbean countries, he has been in a living hell. He has faced numerous physical attacks by homophobic thugs. He is estranged from his relatives and friends. There is no police or state support to protect him. His physical and emotional health is deteriorating and his life is increasingly in danger. We, a group of LGBTQ friends in Toronto, have been his only life line. We have so far helped him build a small house, which is now partially completed.
With the help of some well-wishers we have so far sent him approx. $ 5000. He has built the basic structure of the house, put the hygro and water on, and paid for some essential personal medical treatment. He needs another $5,200 to complete the house to a safe and adequate standard and for further medical care.
On behalf of Augustas Dennie, we earnestly request you to help our efforts to complete this small house. Any amount, however small, is most welcome.
