UCSB Pilipino Cultural Night 33
Donation protected
In May 2024, UCSB PCN will present its 33rd Annual Pilipino Cultural Night. In the past 9 months, we have started our preparation for the one of UCSB's oldest and largest student-led producitons on campus. Our goal is to showcase the culture of the Philippines while giving students the opportunity to network, develop new skills, and become part of a close knit community. PCN raises awareness for the Pilipinx and Pilipinx-American Culture as it strives to convey and highlight issues and values that are not only prominent within Filipino culture, but also spreads a message that can transcend cultural and ethnic boundaries.
This year, PCN 33 will be a modern Filipino coming-of-age romance starring two main characters: Jericho and Kara. Their paths cross as they attend a post-grad Summer Program called “Bayanihan: 4 The Youth” centering around inspiring leadership within the Filipino Communities' youth with the intent of mending the strains of our diaspora. Bayanihan’s motto is “Community starts with (You)th”.
Join Jericho, Kara, Kirby, and others as they navigate their cultural differences and unravel the adverse effects of their clashing upbringings. PCN 33 focuses on themes of toxic Filipino culture, cultural estrangement, and the generational history that tie us together.
Alongside the narrative there will be seven cultural performances, including Sakuting, Sala ti Mais, Bulaklakan, Pamaypay ng Maynila, Filipino Martial Arts, Pasikat na Baso, and the national dance of the Philippines, Tinikling. PCN will also modern hip-hop dance, lyrical dance, spoken word poetry, and choir ensemble performances.
For 33 years, Pilipino Cultural Night has given students like us the opportunity to explore their heritage while helping educate the audience on the importance of keeping the Filipino legacy and traditions alive. But with all this, we have mainly relied on fundraising efforts and your donations, with minimal support from the school. Your donation allows us to keep this production alive.
