My granddaughter, Angelina Rangel, is 20 months old. On June 3, 2012 there was a horrible accident and Angelina nearly drowned. She was brought back to us but has significant brain damage. Her wonderful parents Cyndi and Joel Rangel have been by her side at U. C. Davis's Children Hospital everyday since the accident. They have shown such dedication to their little angel and decided, against all of the doctor's recommendations, to give Angelina a chance to heal. On July 6th she had surgery to place a trach and feeding tubes. She is recovering well and on July 9th the respirator was turned off to see if she could breath on her own. As I am writing this, Angelina has been breathing with no assistance for over an hour. We are beyond happy.
Angelina will be in the hospital for another month or so and when she gets home she will require a lot of special care. There has been significant success in repairing brain damage with hyperbaric oxygen treatment, but it is not covered by any type of insurance. The expense will be significant. In addition, they will need to get a special vehicle to accommodate Angelina with all of the equipment that she will need to get her to and from appointments.
Her mom and dad are both self employed and their income has been severly impacted. Cyndi will no longer be able to work since Angelina will need significant care. My hope is that all of our friends, family and caring people can help Cyndi , Joel, Angelina and Chris (the awesome big brother) out through this difficult time. Any amount will be appreciated.
We have been blessed with the prayers of so many. Please continue to pray for Angelina's recovery!
