UC Davis Student-Athlete SJ Fund

As a member of the UC Davis women’s volleyball team, we went to a tournament at the University of Texas Arlington on September 14th, 2017. In light of the recent law, “Texas House Bill 3859,” which allows child welfare agencies to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and religion, a travel ban to the state of Texas has been put on all state schools in California. Our team was still allowed to participate in this tournament because it was planned before the law was public, and because we didn't use university funds or student tuition money to do so. Before going we discussed our options and decided to go for many reasons, one being that because of deposits and cancellation fees, the state of Texas would get more money if we didn't go, another being that our purpose as a sports team is to compete and get better. Many members on our team discussed this and decided that if we were to support the Texas’ economy by participating in UT Arlington Invitational Tournament, we had to do something in support of the equal rights we believe everyone deserves. That being said some members of our team decided to start a fundraiser.


Everything earned in our fundraiser will go to the Resource Center in Dallas. On our trip, a few of our members visited the Center and learned about how instrumental it is in supporting the LGBTQIA community in Dallas. In addition, we showed our support for the community at the tournament by wearing specific items recognized as being in support of LGBTQIA rights.


We really appreciate any help given in support of the Resource Center and our fight for equal rights.
