• Send UAD TIGERS into the WILD!

Goal: To offer a fun, thrilling and unique outdoor learning opportunity for our 6th grade students.

Sometimes it takes a little help from our friends to truly EXPEREINCE learning.

Meet the founding 6th Grade Class at UP Academy Dorchester (UAD).  We are are a class of writers, geographers, mathematicians, dancers, bibliophiles, role models, basketball stars, and spunky individuals.

UAD is in its second year transforming lives as an in-district turn-around charter school in the heart of Boston.  Not only did this 6th grade class make history on the 2014 MCAS  but they also grew astronomically as people.  Rigorous academics, explicit character development, and unique learning opportunites define our school's mission.  Last year we took them to Thompson Island for a science investigation – 70% of the scholars had never been on a boat before yet 100% of them loved digging through the shells to find living organisms!

Can you imagine what these scholars could learn about themselves, their community, and the world – if they spent 3 days in the forests of New Hampshire?

We are asking for your help to raise $100 per student ($5500 total) to send our scholars into the wild. Windsor Mountain International has hosted many well-known independent schools, and we would be honored to join the list!  Windsor Mountain has served New England students for 55 years, in the charge to create “a warm, diverse, and accepting community, that inspires people to live positive, compassionate, and fulfilled lives.”

Who are WE?   Meet the 6th Grade teaching team: Chelsea Evanyke, Lucy Helan,  Kira Hogan, and Asha Jassani.  We are part of a group of many teachers who works directly with this incredible group of scholars every day.  We share similar experiences as a campers turned leader at an outdoor leadership camps  across the world (Ms. Helan hails from the UK!).

We were challenged to climb to the top, to jump off the edge, to trust a teammate, and to respect the beauty and dangers of nature.  Now, as teachers, we are eager to see our students grow outside of the classroom and of their social communities.  We have felt the impact these experiences.  Self-confidence, community investment, problem-solving skills, and appreciation for the world are just the beginning of the benefits 3 days outside can provide.

Thank you for reading about our campaign - we are happy to share more information about these incredible scholars & how you can help!
