1 out of 4 adults suffer from some form of Chronic Kidney Failure. I happened to be one of those four who had kidney failure, which resulted in me needing a kidney transplant. I was very fortunate to have a great friend Zach Taylor donate on my behalf in the UAB exchange program, so I could receive a kidney within 6 months instead of 8 years.
After a patient receives a transplant they have to do daily labs for the first two weeks. I lived nearby a lab, so I could sleep in my own bed and get the test done daily. Others who weren’t local had to stay in a dormitory near the UAB campus and it was free. That dormitory is no longer in operation, because of its deteriorating conditions. Kidney Transplant patients now can stay in the nearby Hotel, but at a cost $700-$1400 for the two weeks.
Many patients are opting out of getting a transplant, because of the financial burden of the hotel. Our team’s goal is to help with the financial piece for low income families unable to afford the housing & gas to receive a kidney transplant. My life has forever changed because of the generosity of others. Now we want to pay it forward to those in need.
