DAVID & MELISSA HUERTA

Dear Family & Friends

We are appealing on behalf of our family members David & Melissa Huerta.  David & Melissa live in Placitas, NM but have family and friends all over the country and especially in Colorado.  Just a couple of weekends ago Melissa decided to make a trip to Denver CO to visit with her dear son Ben and also visit family & friends.

Unfortunately David/husband was not able to join her being that he had just returned from Stanford Hospital in California where he had so unselfishly just donated his kidney to a dear friend of theirs who was in great need.  He was still recuperating from this surgery.

On the fateful day of Saturday, Sept 15, 2018, Melissa, DeeDee/good friend, and Ben (Melissa's only son and the absolute love of her life) made the trip from Denver to Estes Park, CO for a day in the mountains and to enjoy an Art Festival that was taking place that day.  Needless to say they had a wonderful time and a beautiful day.  At about 6pm they started on their way back to Denver.  As they were coming down the mountain, per DeeDee, they see a vehicle cross over from the opposite lane and head straight into oncoming traffic.   She says they all looked at each other and all they could do is scream.  The car in front of them suddenly swerved to miss the oncoming vehicle and when they swerved Ben, who was driving had no time to react as the car came right at them causing the most horrific of accidents.

With much pain and sadness we say that Ben was hit first and died instantly on impact.  Melissa was in the back seat and sustained so many injuries, her whole body was a broken mess.  DeeDee sustained blows to her chest area but made it out alive to immediately react and start screaming for help to passing traffic.  A doctor passing by stopped and we now know that he saved Melissa's life that day with CPR and other procedures as she was drowning in her own blood.  She was airlifted to trauma hospital, Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO where she has been fighting for her life in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for the last several weeks.   She was bleeding internally and after 21 units of blood and a removed spleen they stopped the bleeding.  However she sustained a broken mandible, clavicle, arm, had a brain injury with bleeding, damage to cervical and thoracic spine, and lacerations to head and face.

We now know that the most disheartening part of this tragic day is that it SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED!  The woman driving the other vehicle was on a proposed suicide mission and under the influence of alcohol and drugs, this being her 4TH DUI!!

Please help us help David & Melissa get through this most difficult of times.  Melissa has had to undergo 5 different surgeries and has already spent more than 2 weeks in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and as of this weekend doctors are saying it could be at least 2-3 more weeks before she can even be released to a lower level of care.

THEY ARE FACED WITH INSURMOUNTABLE MEDICAL AND OTHER MISC. EXPENSES SO ANY DONATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS WE TRY AND HELP THEM DEFRAY THE COSTS OF THIS MOST UNFORTUNATE DAY!!
