Mozhgan is a pocket rocket. She's smart, passionate, generous, driven and incredibly resilient. However, after many years living as a refugee in Indonesia, she’s crumbling. Mozhgan has no rights to work, study, drive, marry, travel or to even hold a bank account. Without these basic rights it impossible for her to live a normal life, let alone to thrive.
Six years ago, Mozghan and her family fled Iran to save their lives. Since then, she’s they’ve lived a life in the shadows. Despite living with constant stress and uncertainty, Mozghan has managed to set up an NGO to support and advocate for refugee rights. She runs free medical clinics, gathers and distributes donations, coordinates legal support and information, and is a tireless advocate.
With Australia and the US shutting its doors to refugees in Indonesia, the future is dark for Mozhgan.
Staying in Indonesia means a life in limbo, the constant struggle to survive, excluded from all aspects of regular life. And going back to Iran means prison, possible torture and death.
She’s got one last hope, and this is it.
A group of Canadians heard about Mozhgan’s amazing work on this ABC program . They reached out, wanting to get her to Canada with a sponsored resettlement. That means a group of five Canadians will sponsor her visa, and be her rock in Canada, supporting her to make a new life.
But they need the money to make it happen. $16 500 will cover the costs of Mozhgan's first year in Canada, including accommodation, travel, food, furniture and clothing. $4000 has already been committed. We need your help with the rest.
This fundraiser is coordinated by Mozhgan's Australian friends, Alex Moulis and Gem Romuld. The funds will be held by Mozhgan's team of five Canadian sponsors led by Martha Spencer Binks, who will need to show the Canadian government that the funds are available for Mozhgan on her arrival in Canada.
Yes, Mozhgan is just one person, and there are millions in need. But if you’ve ever wondered what you can do to support refugees, this is a solid and important step that will make a huge difference, first to one person, and then to a whole community.
Over the last couple of years Mozhgan has managed to coordinate dental and optical tests for hundreds of refugees, providing glasses and medication with ad hoc donations and volunteer doctors.
When Mozhgan gets to Canada she plans to study human rights law and to continue her advocacy work. Living in a country where she has basic human rights, the sky will be her limit.
