One of my most favorite quotes was authored by Aristotle: "We Are What We Repeatedly Do; Excellence, Then, Is Not An Act, But A Habit."
Over the last two decades, I have held onto to this quote as a reminder of what it truly means to go after my dreams and finally live the life I want...letting go of "fear" and doing what God has called on me to do...
I began my novel many moons ago it seems, but kept putting it on the shelf for myriad reasons, including raising my child as a single parent, holding down full-time employment while attending college, and other life distractions.
My story has been festering to come alive and I feel that now is the time. In preparation for this monumental event in my life, I submitted an excerpt from "This Ain't That" to For Harriet.com (You can read it at http://soar.forharriet.com/2015/01/this-aint-that-excerpt.html) . It was accepted and published in January 2015. I followed that with a personal narrative, which is about workplace discrimination due to my sexual orientation. It can be found at: http://www.advocate.com/commentary/2015/02/23/op-ed-i-stay-closeted-put-food-table.
Since the publication of my narrative, I envision collecting similiar stories from other SGL individuals who have experienced discrimination in the workplace, school, or any other location. It is vital that we tell our stories; we are a people who will not be silenced!
