Adaptive Bike for Mason
Tax deductible
Mason's Story:
Mason is an amazing almost eight year old boy who just happens to have down syndrome with autism. He has three heart defects, lung disease, hypotonia, and hip dysplasia. Recently his neurologist discovered that Mason has a tethered cord which is contributing to his neurological symptoms. He is scheduled to receive surgery to address this concern. He has no motor planning and below average gross motor abilities, has generalized weakness, especially with posture and decreased balance. Because of Mason‘s condition, he cannot safely use regular mobility products. This mobility bike would be an excellent source of therapy for Mason before and after his surgery. It will provide a significant motivation for Mason to remain active after his tethered cord surgery, which will be very beneficial for a full recovery! This bike will help him gain the strength he needs to live an amazing life. The bike will strengthen his muscles, improve his range of motion, aid circulation, develop hand/eye coordination and head and trunk control and improve his cardiovascular endurance. Having his own bike would allow Mason to participate in community activities with his family like walks, while also providing a sense of individuality for Mason where he will benefit from peer interaction and social acceptance. Mason is beginning to become aware that he cannot ride a traditional bike. Every child deserve to be active, social, and feel a sense of belonging in the community! This bike would give Mason that gift.
