Sydney Spack Cancer Fund

We are reaching out to the community, family and friends of our beloved friend Sydney Spack, to help ease the strain she has been faced with this year. While living abroad in Australia in February 2019, Sydney was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the shockingly young age of 28.

Sydney is an adventurous, compassionate and courageous woman who has a passion for travel and all living beings. She is the type of person who will do absolutely anything for her loved ones and has the kindest heart. Sydney is being positive through this devastating time in her life and is looking forward to the bright future ahead of her.

Sydney made the decision to move back home to Vancouver, BC to move forward with treatment and to be in the presence of her family and friends. March 7, 2019 was Sydney’s first gynecologist appointment, where she was immediately referred to BC Cancer. It was then that her team of doctors had diagnosed her with Stage 1 cervical cancer, and provided her with an aggressive treatment plan.

The treatment plan was an aggressive low dose radiation which targeted the pelvis area and all of her reproductive and main organs within the same vicinity. This process took place over a span of seven weeks.

Since Sydney was informed that she would lose function of her ovaries and be incapable of having children in the future, In Vitro Fertilization egg retrieval (IVF) was the most viable option. The decision to go through with this procedure was time sensitive, as it had to be completed prior to radiation. The IVF was expensive and painful, however, twelve eggs were saved and are currently being stored on a month-to-month basis.

After completing treatment, she anxiously awaited her PET and MRI scan to review its effectiveness. She further anticipated returning back to Australia to her loving boyfriend, Darragh. Early July 2019, these scans revealed that the cancer had been effectively treated in the cervix area and most surrounding lymph nodes, though another concern was brought to light.

Throughout the past five months, the cancer had become metastatic and spread to her spine (L1 and internal area of bone), and potentially her blood.

Although there is no cure for this cancer Sydney will continue to fight it and be positive. Sydney started her second round of treatment on August 19th. This treatment is an aggressive high dose of radiation to the spine.

Sydney's parents, James & Sharon, as well as her step parents have been supporting her financially this past year and will continue to support her throughout her recovery. They appreciate all donations to help Sydney feel more financially independent.

Donations raised will help cover the costs of:

- Additional Integrated Health treatments not covered by MSP
- Living expenses as she is not able to work during treatment due to pain
- IVF (procedure and storage fees)
- Prescription costs
- Recover costs incurred from prior treatment, which have left her in a vulnerable financial state
- Costs of treatment incurred while first diagnosed in Australia

Sydney would be appreciative of any words of encouragement, or advice during this emotional journey to recovery. All funds will be directly deposited and accessible by Sydney.
