On December 7, 2018, Tyson, a loving husband, and father of two young children, was diagnosed with ALS. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Messages from the upper and lower neurons degenerate or die and stop sending messages to the muscles. Gradually individuals lose their strength and the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. Lou Gehrig, a famous baseball player, brought national and international attention to the disease when he was diagnosed in 1939, which is why ALS is commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. The cause is unknown, there are no treatments, and there is no cure. Estimated life expectancy once diagnosed is 2-5 years.
Tyson is a kind, intelligent, hard-working, and loving family man. ALS usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, so getting this diagnosis at age 35 has been a devastating blow to an otherwise healthy, fit young man and his family. Along with Tyson's wife of 7 years, Kristen, and their two children, Claire (4) and Ryan (21 months), the Hellman Family is now facing the hardest challenge of their lives.
The estimated annual cost of care for an ALS patient is significant: around $200,000 a year. The funds donated to the Hellman Family as part of this campaign will go towards the medical care and equipment Tyson needs and the financial hardships he and his family will be facing.
The sunflower is the official symbol of ALS. The sunflower "stands tall and strong, ever hopeful and ever reaching higher. Sunflowers grow in clusters and support each other as they grow, just as family, friends and community offer support to those who live with ALS." - Shirley Schmelzle, fellow Cincinnatian who lost her battle with ALS in 2016. Tyson and Kristen are so grateful and blessed to be surrounded by family and friends as they navigate this diagnosis and the challenges that come with ALS. The road ahead will be challenging and unknown, but the love and support of family, friends and community will help them through this. We love you all very much!
