Tyler's NOLS Trip

Donation protected

There’s nothing quite like seeing the remote wilderness on your own two feet, carrying all your own gear on your back while gaining the tools necessary to become a great leader in the backcountry and at home. - NOLS Website

Since I discovered NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) in high school, I have dreamed of attending.  Climbing, hiking, or kayaking, this adventuring is the type of schooling that resonates with me. So with a passion and desire to enter the Outdoor Education industry, I applied to attend a 30-day backpacking course.

I was accepted into the program traveling though the Scandinavian backcountry for 30 days, hopefully meeting with the local Sami people. Throughout this trip we will be learning backcountry etiquette including Leave No Trace principles, backcountry cooking, route-finding and navigation, as well as emphasizing a development of leadership skills. I will fly into Stockholm, Sweden and hop on a train to the northernmost point of Sweden, finding myself in Abisko. From here I will meet the rest of the crew attending the trip, and prepare for our adventure. Check out the Course Description for a bit more information on the trip. If you have any questions or would simply like to talk, feel free to email or call me.

It’s not just the adventure and backcountry experience that calls me to do this. I’m interested in the tangible skills I will learn, helping me to become a skilled outdoor leader. My goal is to take these learnings and share them with others. To share the best of myself in order to improve the lives of others, those who need it.  In that facet, I hope to find a company specializing in wilderness therapy, or a company such as Outward Bound to help at-risk teens find their voice and develop positive life-long habits.

Unfortunately, schooling can be a bit expensive. But instead of allowing finances to hold back my dream, I have decided to ask for support. I was lucky enough to receive a partial scholarship from NOLS, but still have some fundraising to do. Although it is difficult, I am asking you, my friends and family, to help support me in this endeavor. Rachael has put a fundraising site together and I would appreciate any support.
