Until All The Pieces Fit for Tyler

Until All The Pieces Fit

Tyler David Chandler (McMillan): Born 11/1/96 at 4:39am 6 lbs 11oz's 19". My greatest Miracle!

An expecting mother's worst nightmare.. Being told your baby will most likely not survive birth.

I was just entering my third trimester. I had only gained 12 lbs during pregnancy. The doctor had done several ultrasounds and various other tests. He called us into his office to give us the options. Even to this day I remember his words, "Your baby has multiple brain structure issues and you will most likely lose him before or during birth. If he does survive, he will be in a vegetative state. As this delivery will be very high risk to your survival as well due to previous losses & bleeding complications that may arise, we are offering you the choice to abort."

No! I was tormented by this and losing faith. I sought the guidance of a church and through enormous prayer & support I went through with the delivery. He fought for exactly 24 hours and 9 minutes from the 1st contraction, but he was here! My miracle was born beautiful and breathing. They discussed a few medical precautions to watch for but after just a day, we were sent home to start our life. My miracle was here to stay.

That spring my family & I decided to spend the day at an outdoor fair. After a long day out on the sun we headed home. Suddenly my baby is lethargic and unresponsive. We take him to the ER where after 7 hours of purgatory Tyler finally wakes up. They advise he has Complex Partial Seizures "“ Epilepsy. Over the next few years we start to notice Tyler's development is not where it should be. A new diagnosis "“ Epilepsy with Learning Delay & Autistic Tendencies. There were no options but medication. Over the next 15 years Tyler has been through multiple medication changes, MRI's, EEG's, and countless blood draws. He was bullied a lot throughout elementary & middle school for being different & slower. The entire time he remained my sweet, caring, and amazing little boy. He will hug you and bring you a tissue if he sees you crying, laugh with you at the silliest things, dance when there is music and bring a joy to your heart that leaves you wondering how you enjoyed life before Tyler was in it.

These years have been tough. Countless meeting with teachers & staff to ensure he receives the best education possible. Doctor appointments & tests that send him into such fear and resistance we are forced to hold our sweet boy down just to get answers. After all "“ Tyler was not supposed to survive birth let alone be walking, talking, feeding & dressing himself, reading at any level, writing his name, playing basketball, completing puzzles and most recently, learning to play pool.

When Tyler turned 17 years old I started to wonder what his future would be. He would never drive a car, still be taking daily medications, maybe have a job that the community allows him to do, and be dependant on me for the rest of his life. I then remembered how he fought to be in this world and how he has surpassed everyone's expectations of accomplishment. I decided to request one more string of tests. I had to know. They found it! Finally answers. The doctors want to remove about 80% of his right temporal lobe & hippocampus. The doctors firmly believe that this surgery gives Tyler the best chance at not only a healthier, fuller life but one that could possibly be seizure free. This is the news a parent prays for and dreads all in the same thought. A possible cure is available but it means putting his life in danger to try and get it.

On June 19th Tyler underwent a 6-7 hour surgery - Temporal Lobectomy and removal of the Hippocampus. Unfortunately,Tyler had a stroke. His entire left side was affected. As most know he has bounced back rather quickly, but that was due to intensive therapy. To date he has been seizure free but he will always be Autistic with Learning Delays. I am worried about his living situation once I'm gone. I am starting to save for his future in a group home in case a family member or friend can not take him in.

My sweet boy deserves the best I can leave for him. If you knew him you would know in a heartbeat that he is special and amazing. He is thoughtful, loving & eager to help anyone he can.

Please keep us in your  thoughts & prayers.  Any help in any way would be much appreciated. Thank you & Blessings!
